Has your watch collecting matured?
I’m 48 and have worn only Tudor and Rolex for the past 30 years. I started looking outside the brand a few months ago and bought a Panerai 524 today. I considered an OF PM Daytona but just couldn’t justify it. Down to four watches now, not sure if that is “matured”.

Started this journey back in 2011 or so. Always have been into whatever catches my eye and interest no matter the brand.
In terms of acquisitions started with a Breitling Navitimer World, got a Panerai 6 years later, a Rolex SD43 6 months later, three AP's the following 14 months and have come full circle with a SS SkyD, AP PoG and a Breitling 1959 Navi reissue effectively all at the same time (now). In terms of Rolex, I'm content with my SD43 and SS SkyD. Hoping Rolex releases a full PM SD43 but not holding my breath on any other model. Watches that are on my future radar include an RG Royal Oak, maybe a 5524r as my venture into Patek, or a Lange 1815 chronograph. In the grand scheme if I had to stop collecting now I would be very content; even slimming a watch or two just to tighten everything up. There's some sub $2k watches that really catch my eye so thinking about trying a few out. No matter what life is pretty damn good.

Yes! I buy watches for me now instead of what I want other people to think. At 57 I care more about how I feel about the watch...Have an Explorer, Omega Borad Arrow and a Cartier Ronde.

Always had some "affordables" Seiko , Hamilton etc. stepped up some Damasko , Sinn etc .
Took it up one more notch Omega , Rolex .. never aspired to any above 10k price point just made no sense to me. Having Family colleges , cars , weddings never ending expenses Getting to a point where I can spring for $$ watches maybe AP , or VC. But I find I'm going backwards sold off most have a few to go and I'm going to go the Explorer 1 route for everyday ( I tell myself if it's good enough for Roger Smith Lol ) |

That’s an interesting question:
I like and respect Rolex, but it’s only one of dozen brands I like and buy. My journey goes something like this, chronologically: 10-15 years ago: IWC-> JLC -> Pam -> Rolex -> Vacheron -> Glashutte Then: Patek -> Breguet -> Lange -> Journe. Have been thinking to add one or two modern Rolex to the box, but haven’t been able to successfully acquire the references (due to the shortage). Been eyeing Grand Seiko as well; still warming up to them. It would nice to have a Moser as well. Then there is the new Urban Jurgensen Alfred 40...temptations. As you can see, I’m all over the map, and I see no reason to be confined to any particular brand, given so many wonderful options. That said, this is a hobby, do what pleases us. |

I’ve matured! The older I’ve become, the more I realise less is more. I’ve got rid of so much stuff, simplified my life no end, and feel so much lighter as a result. The more you own, the more stuff owns you etc etc ... I just wish my wife would learn this also!

I’m not sure about mature but I think I have gotten a little wiser. When I started this journey 6 years ago, I got caught up in the hype to expand my collection. In hindsight, I realize that was a mistake as I was not in a financial position to do so at the right pace. To make matters worse I attempted to do it too rapidly and in the span of a year I added a Tudor, a submariner, an Ingenieur, and a Speedmaster (reduced). I got burned on the Submariner and the watch wasn’t what I thought it was. The IWC and the Omega were awesome watches but once the honeymoon period faded I never wore them. Sold the IWC and Submariner with minimal loss. The Omega I couldn’t sell so I gifted to my best man. Got burnt out and took a hiatus from the hobby.
Lessons learned for me; - Ensure finances in order before even looking at watches. Use only surplus - Evaluate collection and set hard limit. No redundancy. Plan future acquisitions. - Research the watch. Why do I want this watch? Will I still be wearing it in 6 months? - Research the seller if grey. - Pace purchases to a minimum of 6 months in between. |

I started at 18 with a Cartier, got several Seiko, Hamilton and Omega then a Rolex at 24. Not sure if it is 'mature' but I like what I've got and I'm content.
