Get what you want. Go with your gut. Nothing else matters. Declining something you don’t want will not hurt your cause. You’ll get a Sub pretty soon, they seem to be delivering within a few months for people whose ADs take seriously.

If you have been doing research on TRF
You should know by now buy what you like because even if we answered YES to all your questions if you don't like the rootbeer and don't wear it then what is the point of buying a watch you don't wear?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If they can get you a CHNR and you're new to them, they can find a Sub Date in SS. All this justifying bias and FOMO is no way to buy a watch. |

If i were you i would wait a bit, yes...i think the Rootbeer is an amazing watch but if you pull the trigger and buy it your sure to get another call off them soon also offering you the Sub,
what would you do then? Do you have the funds to get both? cause if you dont you will be pulling your hair our having to say no to the AD's Sub offer! tough choice mate |

Which do you like more, the Sub or this GMT? If you can only afford one in the near future, only settle for the one you want. Now, if you can (reasonably) afford both and really like this GMT, then go ahead and pull the trigger.
Personally, I like them both equally. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Thank you all for the responses. I'm reading a lot more "don't get it" responses than I expected. Looks like I'm giving the impression that I don't like the watch and that I'm jumping on it because it's available. Which I didn't think I was doing, but if you've all felt that way from my post, maybe I need to evaluate that further.
A good question raised here is which do I like more: sub or root beer? And honestly, I don't LOVE the submariner, it just made sense cognitively for it to be my first watch (price, versatility and easily recognized as a Rolex). If I were to able remove all the noise (hype, scarcity, appreciation potential, price) and I had the two watches infront of me; I would say the root beer is a watch I find better looking. Not sure if that should play into my decision? |

If you’re set on Rolex, that’s fine but don’t try and cognitively rationalize a purchase for a Rolex - it’s an irrational non-essential luxury item. Most here buy because they like it (not all...) but it’s very easy to get sucked into hype and end up buying something based on what others think you should have. For reference, I have a two tone datejust - far from a “hot” Instagram model, but I wouldn’t trade it for any Daytona/Pepsi/etc because I bought it because I liked it best. Will it hold value? Reasonably, and certainly not to the extent that a Daytona would, but frankly I don’t care because it’s not going to be up for sale. Is the gold worth it? Strictly speaking the extra cost for the two tone model is more than the price of gold (so no not “worth” it’s cost in gold), but to me personally I put “worth” on it because the extra cost gets me what I wanted. |

If what you say applied to my situation I would be a CHNR owner in the very near future. As it happens, I should be. I love this watch. I think it's the equal most stylish and visually clever TT watch Rolex make, along with the Blusey. Mine should be along any month now. All the best with it. |

If you do lean towards the chocolate version GMT, nobody is going to question your decision, plenty here have chosen this watch over others. Most folks give opinion that is their preference, not yours.

The root beer GMT is a beautiful watch. It's also quite different from a steel submariner. Only you can decide if it will satiate your craving for a sub or not.
I laugh at the people on here saying no one respects a sub. The sub is still the King of Rolex. It's the brand's most iconic watch. Too much time spent on internet forums, I think. If I could only have one Rolex, or one watch for that matter, it'd be a steel black dial sub date. No pepsi, daytona, batman, hulk, etc (and I love all those watches), gimme a good ol' sub! |

If you’re just starting your career both watches are too expensive now unless you’re well above 6 figures annually. Save longer and really think about what you want. Just my opinion

The Root Beer is a more interesting piece. The Sub is a classic, but they are everywhere. If you want something to mark a milestone, go for the different piece, get the Root Beer.

I’d avoid a normal sub as I’d hazard a guess that the majority of them you see are fakes
The root beer is far rarer and I’d jump on it |

If you’re just buying into the brand for peer recognition then the two tone would get spotted more readily.

The root beer is an amazing watch.
If it’s going to be your only Rolex for a while I wouldn’t buy it and stay focused on the Sub. |

So many good posts with great advice here. Nothing more to add really - other than to affirm, “buy the watch that sings to you” If you fall in love with the CHNR after trying it on buy regardless (assuming you can afford it). Otherwise, pass and wait for the SS Sub.
I walked away from a CHNR and SS Skydweller a few weeks ago because neither appeals to me and I wouldn’t want to buy a watch just because it’s hard to find / get when I know the AD has a long list of guys who REALLY want those watches. (and I would never consider flipping!). |

I would buy a CHNR over a sub any day of the week, I have a LN version and its an absolutely fantastic bit of kit, I love it!

HELP! Rolex newbie who got a call from the AD for a watch, not sure if I should pull
The modern GMT Root Beer is rose gold and stainless steel. That is a lot of cash to spend on a watch that mighy not be likely suitable for everyday wear unless you will.
If you really like the Root Beer (regardless if you like it as an everyday watch) why not go for a 2-tone SS / YG 16713 with the brown dial? That resembles the original and more iconic Root Beer that Clint Eastwood help make popular. 16713s from the early 2000s go for less than $10k USD. Save a ton of cash. Random pic below is from Google... |

Right now everything is hot but historically TT does not hold value well, keep that in mind.
That being said, the sub is the s-class of watches. Youre paying alot to see yourself coming and going. The rootbeer is a far MOre interesting choice for a budding WIS.

Exactly. I wouldn’t ever pay MSRP for a 2-tone watch. When the economy eventually goes south, 6-digit 2-tone watches will be among to first to take a hit. The 5-digit 2-tone has been retired for a long time and will take a less hit (if any). Plus, the case isn’t the super-case version and screams “ look at me”. Just my opinion that wasn’t asked for :) |
