If you're at his bank you might as well get a cashier's check. That way there's no chance of it bouncing or it being canceled after he takes ownership of the watch.

Actually no, you don't. I know you prefer to hear from those that condone this transaction, and maybe it's due to the fact I'm too greedy and HATE giving $ away, and assuming you don't absolutely NEED this $ NOW, I wouldn't take it. The 16610 is of no concern to me regarding this deal as you can pick one up for a steal in todays market.

Obviously you really love this watch, which is even more reason for you to hold onto it a while longer. I could understand if you receive absolutely zero enjoyment from the watch...take the money & use it toward something that will bring enjoyment (be it paying off debt or buying other watches)...but clearly you still love wearing it. It does not sound like this watch is a 'safe queen' that sees the light of day once a year. There's a lot to be said about that fact and I don't think you should disregard it. Cash is nice, but life it too short to part with things that put a smile on your face. I can tell from your posts this watch definitely puts a smile on your face.

And your fear of walking around w/ a $35K watch can easily be alleviated via insurance (as I'm sure you already have on the watch). That's the beauty of insurance...once insured and you have the piece of mind that you will at least not lose $ if stolen or lost...it gives you the opportunity to freely enjoy the watch.

Nope, I would still say walk...enjoy the watch for another couple of years and sell it for $50K+. While modern Daytona's are made in high numbers and probably will never become a true collectors item (at least not in our lifetime), the watch you own IS rare and WILL ALWAYS be rare. Items like that don't go from $35K to $10K...it's just not going to happen. The longer you hold onto it, the more $ you're going to make - period. With 2 more years of ownership you will not only continue the enjoyment you obviously have with the watch, but with the added cash you'll surely make will be enough to buy a couple 16610's + cash.

I hope I don't sound like I'm raining on your parade...honestly that's not my intent. I wish you the best of luck if you decide to go through with it and positive you'll enjoy your 16610 + the cash. But it is so obvious in pretty much each one of your posts that this watch means a lot to you and I'm not convinced you're convinced it's time to part with it.

A cashier's check is not easily canceled if you don't have the check yourself. If you want to cancel a check once it is out of your possession there's a waiting period and chances are to receive a refund you'll probably have to buy an bond to insure the check wasn't used to pay a debt. Once issued, cashier's checks are virtually fraud proof. It has the backing of the bank and should be treated as cash.

P.S. To pour a little more salt on the wounds (sorry), I must admit your Daytona is by far my favorite of all the vintage. Black face w/ white sub-dials and black tach scale...no doubt the most beautiful color combo ever put together. If Rolex made another with that setup, I would be a modern Daytona owner in a heartbeat!

Well Lobo it is your call I am sure you have thought long and hard over it. $35k cash is hard to come by but not as hard to come by as that watch. They print money every day but Rolex will never build another one like that.

Pops has the exact same watch. I better not let him know you're getting 35K for yours - he lives in Vegas & likes the casinos (I stand to inherit that watch - someday).

I remember the thread you started telling us how you acquired the watch and so on, my question is was his first offer $35k or did you get him up to that point? If that was his first offer, I guarantee he had a little more waiting in the other hand behind his back if you didnt bite. If that that were his first offer I'd try and squeeze a little more out of him. Say $40k? Anyway, knowing how you acquired it and what's on the table, I'd get the deal done ASAP if I had to be at the bank the next morning waiting on it to open, but thats just my opinion. I would get cash though, to much going on with checks these days. With cash there's no possibility of anything going wrong, especially when you get it from a bank

On the way to the bank could be a problem. I would do a dummy and tell him I will be there at x O'clock but turn up at least 30 to 45 mins earlier and sit inside the bank.

Also give him your route. E.G. "I'll take the subway to xyz station and walk to the bank". But in actual fact you take a cab or get someone to drop you off in front of the bank door.

BTW, the 6263 used to sell in Tokyo for about $35K, it is now down to $25K in this depressed market.

So you are getting a super good deal. Just take extra care.

Make sure he cant cancel cheque ounce out of bank before u can cash it,then he got money and Rolex.Be aware no one follows you after if take cash,get a friend in distance maybe camera,just thinking for u mate.
