Can’t believe no one is recommending a cellini Prince!

See, this is what the problem is and will hurt the brand. This individual here in their post should be able to do just that, save up, walk into the AD as we did for decades, and reward oneself with a fantastic watch, or "a crown" for the achievement so to speak. Sadly, its not going to happen because these have become more commodity to be bought in bulk, traded and sold rather than purchased, worn, and appreciated.

Folks can balk, but an experience like this will not likely sit well with the OP as it shouldn't, and likely drive them to an apple watch, but hopefully and more optimistically another great brand out there.

There appear to be 5 ADs in Greater Boston, a metro area of over 5 million people. 3 are Long’s. So yeah, great odds of a close connection to the AD owner.

Good luck, OP.

No wonder the OP hasn't posted again....must be so confusing to stumble upon this forum and be told you've no chance of getting a Rolex, well not unless you kiss ass....then you find Chrono and there's 72000 for sale.

DDS here.

As a first time buyer, I was able to buy a submariner with date last year by visiting 2 ADs total of about 5 times. Took me about 5 months of trying.

Last month, I was able to buy a two tone root beer (GMT 126711CHNR) within a week from a different AD buy putting 50% down.

Good luck and be patient. Given the current circumstances, it might take a long time (12-24 months) to be able to buy one from an AD.

Get a referral from them to their AD owner. Will serve you much better than coming here for advice.
A little transparency here, plus some questions:

-I'm a doc student--not a doctor yet :)
-there seems to be a lot of technical terms used on this forum. I understand that AD=Authorized Dealer, but what is "grey"? A pawn shop? An unauthorized dealer? How can I be certain I am getting an authentic watch if not from an AD?
-I'm in no real rush as I just delved into this fascinating world, I would rather wait and "do it the right way" as you said. I have heard that some Patek dealers will refuse to sell their pieces to those without a history of owning certain time pieces. Will I run into this problem?

thanks for the advice!

I was a bit disconcerted when I saw some of the replies here regarding the timeline. Funny enough, I had to get the appraisal for my wife's wedding ring today from our jeweler who just so happens to be an AD for Breitling. His opinion was very consistent with what I am seeing here--get on the waitlist and enjoy the ride. Good things come to those who wait I suppose.

Once you are officially a Doctor I’m pretty sure that if you just visited all 5 ADs, introduced yourself as a Doctor, asked to be kept in mind for a black sub, then just follow up with the 5 ADs once a month. I’m pretty sure you will get a black sub in less than a year, with luck much faster.

Good luck.

No, you will not likely run into that problem if you ask for a black sub. If you change your mind and decide you must have a Daytona or Pepsi then yes you will have that problem.

Grey is the used new market(mostly). Guy buys a watch at RRP, sells it to a trader for a mark up as brand new, trader marks it up again and sells it to you. That's grey, new watches without the waiting list but at a significant premium.

I was with a pal in a Patek shop last month and the SA just came right out and said you need to buy one of these before we will consider you for that one you want. Personally, I find Patek to be boring to look at, don't move me at all.

Regarding how you will know if real or fake, due diligence young man. Owner history, service history and receipts, get yourself into an AD and have a browse/feel of the watches. I had a decent fake to try out for weight etc and TBH, beside the real thing you can feel the difference with your fingers :)
