It's one of two things. Either:
1) Rolex and/or the Gray Dealer Syndicate have manufactured false hype over a mediocre watch for 30 years straight, or 2) Not everyone likes the same thing

Initially it seems it was coveted by collectors for its cool history, and function.
Now it’s coveted by the social media crowd as the ultimate hype/flex piece |

There is nothing to get. The Daytona is one of those watches that when you do get it you won’t need any explanation why. A reason the Daytona runs above other models is it brings out such passion. Sometimes that emotion is negative but mostly it’s positive for most people. People love to hate this watch now because it’s so popular and the watch is left a innocent victim. Much like the way the “pretty popular girl” is considered a threat by other woman.

Very few people hate the Submariner. Most people like it, to varying degrees. But it doesn’t bring out the same passion in people. Perhaps that says something. |

Peoples tastes and style change over the years , I'm sure many on here saying they don't like the Daytona would take one if it was available at retail |

For many years there was lots of hate for the 6 digit sub and maxi case. Probably still is, hopefully it's just moved to the vintage forum.

Your tastes may change over time regarding the Daytona as mine did.
I remember seeing the Daytona on the cover of WatchTime back when Rolex introduced the 4130 movement. I thought it looked pretty good, but nothing I was going to chase after. In 2015 I saw both the white and black dial Daytonas in an AD case (remember those days?) and my indifference was reaffirmed. However, in 2016 when the ceramic stainless Daytona was released I found myself smitten. It took 4 years of waiting to get one, but it is one of my favorites in my small collection. |

I'm not quite sure where you're getting the overly "busy" look from. It's a chronograph, and if you compare it to other chronographs of a similar caliber you'll notice the Daytona is on the more minimalist side of the spectrum. The sizing it great, it's slim, the dial is not cluttered with a Date window, it has a great movement and huge history in general.
For someone shopping specifically for a chronograph this is almost always the best choice. (leaving out the ridiculous unobtainium issue). |

I think the OP just doesn’t like chronographs in general. We see threads like this over on the Porsche forums. “I don’t get the fuss about the GT3RS? It’s got less creature comforts, rides too stiff and the radio sucks for a crazy amount of money….”

It also got me to thinking how tastes actually change over time for some. When I started collecting it was all about divers. Divers are still my first love, but I gradually started to appreciate GMT’s and now I admit to warming to the idea of adding a chronograph. This after 30 years! To the OP, basically it comes down to personal preference. You don’t have to “get” the watch today, but you may find yourself “getting it” tomorrow or in 30 years |

For those that dump on the idea of rehashing a chat. Not everyone who passed through then got it or read it. Opinions change as do trends, nothing is static in life. Enjoy it. Thank you all for taking the time to weigh in. |

I don't like the hype part but love the watch! It's the most comfortable in my opinion of all the sports watches. But hey, that's why there are options.

Just my humble opinion. The Daytona is in my eyes is a very badly designed
cronograph.Any watch that is difficult to read, has a design fault in my eyes. i have owned a ton of Rolex watches including the Daytona. It is very well made, and will last for several life times.I think its popularity today has got more to do with hype, than the reality of the watch. I found it very difficult to read the time, and i know that many other people have the same problem with this model. |

People like different watches for different reasons, that is why there is so much choice for any watch buyer.
OP you don’t like the Daytona, that’s fine I’m not it’s greatest fan either but others love them hence it’s super high price away from the AD’s. I prefer the look of the TT Daytona compared to the SS version but my Speedy is more me than the Daytona. And that’s what is so great about watches, we don’t have to like the same watches, we can choose to collect and wear whatever we want. There are no rights or wrongs just buy what you like and be happy.

I love a good chronograph myself - Breitling was my first "proper" watch love and you tend to have to like busy chronographs to like Breitlings - but I'm not personally the world's biggest Daytona fan myself.
For me it just comes down to two things - whenever I've tried one on it always wears very small on my 7.75" wrist (at least IMO), and the asymmetric lugs on the SS models bother me aesthetically. I just can't unsee it. It's a shame because everything else about it is very well designed, but then I guess it saves me the hassle of trying to get hold of one! |

You don’t have to be a fan of something for it to appeal to others!!
Like anything, some people like beef, others like chicken! Nothing is wrong with the beef or chicken, it’s a matter of taste and liking! For those who like a watch, good for you and for those who do t, also good for you, get something you like and pass on the ones you don’t!!

Some people find a chrono, any chrono, to be too busy, others find a simple time only watch to be boring. But again, I believe most watch purchases just come down to how much a person likes the look. For sure the Daytona is not at this level of popularity because a bunch of people need to time things. I love the look of my Omega Speedmaster, but I use the chrono like once every 4 years, and even then it's usually just to make sure it still works haha. |

I don’t get why we need a same old thread about a same old topic instead of adding to an existing one.

No reason to get upset when someone else doesn't like "your" watch. We are all different. What's the popular thing to say today? "You do you".

So now it's come full circle to this topic again.
1. I can't get a Daytona at retail 2. The wait list is ridiculous 3. The grey market price is too much 4. I don't like the Daytona anyway Move the numbers around anyway you'd like Rinse and repeat. |
