Zéro. The only way people are influencing me is when they make me discover a model I wasn’t aware of.

Hype affects us all - the hype pieces are covered in more articles - forum threads, instagram posts, watch magazines, lifestyle magazines, TV, youtube, etc. We can't escape it.
And the more we see these watches the more "used to" them we will be and eventually we might even start to like them, even if we didn't before. |

I don't have FOMO. Pretty opposite I think. I haven't bought a Rolex in the last 5 years. I have several watches by brands that most would scoff at. I have no "safe queen's" I use my watches and I buy watches I want to wear. Sure I've hopped on here for opinions and what models to research, but ultimately I've either passed due to research or just not wanting to play games. At current prices of some of the "hot" pieces there's action to be had elsewhere for a watch I would enjoy more.

I guess I'm lucky not to have accounts on things like Instagram or TikTok etc where these influences hang out..

Good post ! Point taken we are on this forum basically to share info, purchase history and to discuss and enjoy reading others great and not so great experiences with AD"S and grey market dealers. I'm guilty of it sometimes and come back to reality . I'm still enjoying collection these great time pieces .

I've been buying watches for 30 or so years, and Rolexes for a good proportion of that, and all this latest hype nonsense wasn't a thing for 99% of that time.
As a result, hype has no bearing whatsoever on my decision to buy. I buy what I personally like and because I want to wear it. "Investment", "resale value", all of that other stuff never even enters my head. I know it's a trite and cliché thing to say, but I honestly do only buy watches for me, and I've long kept them hidden away under my sleeve. So much so that very few people I know have any idea of my watches. Showing them off and bragging to others is the furthest thing from my mind. |

I’ve passed on many “hot” references over the past few years. I buy what I want.

The hype only matters when I am into a watch. Then it does impact me.

Great topic of conversation.
For me, it actually leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me get upset at the hobby. I am tired of a lot of the hype being driven by people who just want a status symbol or something to "invest in." It makes the love of the hobby and/or brand hard because those who grew up wanting a Rolex and have an interest in them are turned away at the AD because they won't play the game. This hype is why I stepped away from the forums for a bit. I was tired of the same threads about scratches, demand, investment, etc. Do I think the hype will go away? Sadly, no. I think that the interest and demand is here to stay for a bit. I just hope it tapers out so we can get back to the fun of collecting and wearing what we want for our own reasons - not because everyone else wants it. |

The FOMO and hype around Rolex is pushing me in a different direction. I’ve owned the brand since buying my first new in 2001 after reaching a major life milestone. As more people worry about the condition and value of their watches, what was once truly a hobby now seems more like a business. |

How much does hype and FOMO affect your decision to purchase a Rolex?

FOMO on materialistic things, no not at all.
FOMO on knowledge and being in the know, Yes absolutely. I don’t sweat these things anymore. In 2019 I did but now with life events and milestones I could careless. I’ll let the next gen of watch collectors enjoy the hustle of chasing down the latest and greatest. I periodically enjoy the forums now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

FOMO drove me to buy my 116500 last year. It’s over $10k more now. Glad I bought it then not because I plan on selling but because I wouldn’t be able to convince myself to buy at current market value.

It seems hard to claim one “couldn’t care less” about hype, yet takes the time to read a thread explicitly about hype and FOMO, and respond to a poll…
I see FOMO as more of the people who will fall all over themselves for “any” model, thinking it will be a key to riches. But hype also seems pretty close to “excitement” — something I think anyone who participates in a Rolex Forum probably has about Rolex, whether 2005, 2015, or 2021. |

Never. I turn down watches because of their hype. I live in a smaller city and don’t want to destroy relationships by flipping and think paying grey prices is financially ridiculous, so I sit idle at the moment. In the past 18months I’ve been offered a handful of hot pieces but didn’t love them, so didn’t buy them

I don't so much care if a watch is or isn't hyped and am probably not a good judge since I don't really follow Instagram, Facebook or anything like that.
However, if the hype results in inated prices then I'm out. I'd be embarrassed paying what some do for ordinary watches just because they have a new dial color. Sent from my SM-G991U using Tapatalk |

I would say the only hype and positive Rolex influence I ever could hope for would be here on these forums. Everywhere else in my life people would think I'm an idiot if I told them how many watchs I own and how much I paid for them.

Later on I joined TRF and discovered tons of information and beautiful photos and so I dug real deep, the more I read and see about each references the more I became captivated and wanted to have them all! Some members here say how brilliant Rolex marketing is, but in my perspective all these watch forums are THE marketing for me - just real watch people sharing what they love; none of my friends and family are into watches, they can't tell the difference between a Submariner and a GMT Master II and I'm glad they don't because I don't want to have to explain myself when they ask me why I have multiple similar looking watches. I can positively say that if it wasn't for TRF I probably would just have 2 watches instead of 6 that I have now, but I'm glad I did!

Possibly, purchased 2 from AD's in last month - if not for the hype and FOMO we may have waited until next year for the second although have been after these 2 for a number of years now...

I was offered a Pepsi and a Batgirl and was told I could have my choice of either...I chose the Batgirl. It was a pretty easy choice too!
