I'm still awaiting advice concerning my preemptive toy buying.

There are nerds in basements throughout the world wanting to know the final decision...

Do I sense a poll coming?

I was hoping JJ would get dragged into this thread.

Seriously, which hand do I use to read the hour, which hand reads the second? Why are there 4 hands on my Explorer II? When the little hand is between the triangle and bubble, and the red hand with the triangle marker is pointing at "MADE" near the bottom of the dial, what time is it? Was the little hand made by Mercedes Benz for Rolex? How is a "Superlative Chronometer" better than a Chronometer?

Don't you know that we have to influence our kids with our interests so that we have someone to talk to about it after everyone else wants to clonk us on the head?

I will give my opinion. (But if you don't have time to care, why did you start this thread in the first place?). TRF is different from other fora in many ways. Being off-topic is not considered a crime and sure, that sometimes leads to threads that topic-wise seem meaningless but through their absurdness are a source of fun to many. That alone gives those threads meaning.

The questions that you referred to are tolerated because of several reasons. The question at hand maybe very valid from the newbies' point of view. There are fora that deal with those questions following a different approach. "Have you read the FAQ already?". Or sometimes a downright harsh slap on the wrist for being so ignorant. That is one way to deal with it. A bit intimidating. I personally don't like this.

Applying heavy-handed moderation is not the TRF way but believe me, when it IS applied there's a very good reason for this. Don't get me wrong, I sometimes grit my teeth if someone asks for the 1435th time what polishing cloth to use but that still is no reason to cut off that person just above the knees.

And then there's the incredible self-policing and self-healing capability of this forum. If someone's deliberately playing the fool in an attempt to aggravate the others, our members will put that person in his or her place. And the MOD crew will escort that person to the door if necessary.

So yes, it sometimes can be a bit annoying but dealing with this the way we do has made this forum into a people place, not an 'I'm holier than thou' place.

Should I put my watch crown up or crown down before I go to sleep?
