Without hesitation it was this book.

It was published in 1989 and I had just l graduated college and started my career. Every single thing in the book resonated with me and reinforced the teachings from my parents.

I made both my kids read the book when they turned 16 and they have already started using the advice from the author (and mom and dad).

This book is a must read for young people IMHO.

Just want to let you know that, as much as I love it, it is not a novel that champions the American dream.

It introduces Bukowski’s author-surrogate character he would stick with, Henry Chinasky, who hates his postal delivery job but tells lots of poignant and funny stories about it. The writing finds beauty in simplicity, a bit like Hemingway, and Chinasky is a kind of small-time rebel, lazy and lonely, interested only in booze, women and gambling at the race track.

So it’s not a novel to draw inspiration from (although the positives are Chinasky as a questioner of the status quo, and an appreciator of life’s simple pleasures like classical music). But it is funny, stylish and emotional, and I still love it.
