Buying question –

Great watches guys!

Need advice.

I'm doing some research to purchase a 1608 red. Question – from an investment standpoint, is it better to prioritize box/papers or actual watch qualities/polishing, etc? As new to vintage buyer, at first I only wanted to purchase one with paperwork, now I'm not so sure...

I prefer the MK II dial but realize it might be a stretch.

Thanks for your help.

Scott, for a 1680 Red you are going to have a Meters First, or Feet First Dial. The Meters First have a higher value than the Feet First, if everything else is equal on the watches.

Case condition. Original Dial Condition. Color and evenness of Patina. Hand Condition. These are all the priority considerations when buying a vintage piece and Red Sub. Box and Papers are the icing on the cake and they do increase the value as a full package, if they are authentic.

Recently picked up this '74 (I think) 378XXXX Mark VI Red Sub from a well respected local long-time watchmaker / Rolex service tech. It was nice to have someone I trust open it up to go through together before I said "yes". Had to replace the tube & crown, and decided on a fresh NOS acrylic crystal as well. Love it!

Congrats! Very nice pick up. What’s the date stamp on the case back?

No date, only 1680.

From what I understand, dates were left off case backs starting around '73...

He doesn't typically deal with direct - more shop service, but his info is readily available. Happy to make an intro if you have an actual need...

Very cool... I had to do a double take there for a moment - meters first (mk2?) AND a feet first (mk4?).

I wear the Mk4 most days - which is why it's a little beaten up/scruffy.

Picked this up at a Japanese vintage dealer for my partner, serial is 2,89x,xxx

sadly RSC Japan replaced the bezel and hands, and a VERY deep chip on the 1 oclock mark, so wearing it a bit more cautious than other watches.

Oh btw, this dealer have a pretty cool Vintage Rolex museum in Tokyo http://www.quarkmuseum.com/ if you ever visit japan.

Congrats on this new addition! FYI, 1972 was the last year the case backs were stamped with the year.
