I spoke with the people at my AD yesterday, and mentioned this letter. They are a Boutique, and said they hadn't seen it but the RUMORS they heard made sense. What they THINK is that Rolex is cutting down production and shipments to the ADs and concentrating on Boutiques.

Just speculation but makes sense.

You know that's a great question and I forgot to mention, they were VERY limited on their sports models. I didn't see one BLNR, or Sub, at least in steel.

Omega sales had “a very strong acceleration in the second half of the year.”

i wonder what is the reason

Disposable income, just like what propelled Rolex sales.

Proof they know nothing. Boutiques are run by ADs. You can't separate the two There's no such thing as boutique owned and operated by Rolex itself.

Even the boutique in the Rolex bldg in NYC, literally under RSC, is operated by AD called Wempe.

If this is all true it's going to be very interesting to see the outcome.

On the one hand we have Rolex enthusiasts - such as many of us who frequent TRF, who will maybe be prepared to wait years for the watch of their choice and will play Rolex's games. On the other hand, I'd assume the majority of Rolex's clientele are people who know the brand but are less focused and more causal buyers - they go into the store to see the watches and buy. But if the watch selection isn't there - if there's minimal on display - they will walk out and likely go to Omega or Panerai etc instead.

If this is the case, Rolex have lost my business, as I won't play their games and my money will go elsewhere, as the brand doesn't warrant my loyalty. Indeed I have a nice (hopefully) blue dial, blue strap rose gold Breitling appearing in about four weeks, my first watch from that brand.

If this is Rolex's stance, to deliberately restrict the market in the hope of upping their product's perceived value, I personally hope they ultimately pay price...

Huge price increase might be coming soon for sport Rolex. Just like patek 5711 which increases their price by 20%.

We might not like it but - I don't think a 20% increase in the USA, and even more in other countries, would affect sales at all. In fact they might even increase sales.

I would say that this isn't a serious issue for Rolex as the average Rolex customer is a DJ buyer. As you say, those types of clients walk in and buy what they see, which is more than sufficient with all the variations of the DJ and to some point DD. Your average watch buyer, especially first time buyers, associates a DJ much more with Rolex than the sport lines and probably doesn't know TRF exists.

I was at the Vancouver BC boutique last weekend and they had a white dial exp2, exp1, 114060, and a black GMT. They told me that they've been getting fewer and fewer 114060's in the last few months. Maybe it was just a sales tactic but I'm not sure.

My AD said the same. Cutting down on the Pro Line and fewer watches to some ad’s. And a hunt on the ad’s selling to the grey market.

Looking at trends it’s probably at least 8-10%. I think it’s been 3-4 years in the US since a jump...

I imagine from the point of view of Rolex, it looks like mission accomplished.

Just drop a word in the ear in the right setting of a respected member of the Rolex watch community that's got a high profile on-line and the word is surely going to get out.

One can only assume it's to underpin the fact that watches will simply be harder to get for everybody for the undefined and foreseeable future.
In typical Rolex fashion it's ambiguous and largely open to speculation.

At your service we remain.

I’m embarrassed to admit that that I don’t know what the Rolex class/lineups consist of. I know of the Cellini line, but not the others.

The last increase was in 2012, if memory serves.

Given the rate of increase in the few years prior to that, it does seem that one is due, but people have been predicting the next price increase regularly for nearly six years now.
