I don't think I could lament/regret a 500 dollar depreciation of something which cost a grand 24 years ago! That's about 20 bucks a year. Whoop.

I can't believe the msrp for that tag heuer 1000 is only 200 less than the tag heuer 2000 msrp. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to get 300-350 for mine

Computers must have the worst resale .....it has the same value as the Gateway I bought in 93 and paid 3k for.....paid somebody to haul them all off

Depreciation only effects you if you sell. Like the car I just traded, a bit, but i need a van. And you don't buy minivans used as theres no doubt the family before you trashed it.

Depreciation of a car or whatever is worth it....if you really get the same or more value in personal satisfaction from having owned and used the object.
On the topic of cars, all I care about is having a dependable car that's practical. So i buy used and drive them to the end of their practical life. The last one I had for 15 years and it was 17 years old when I let it go, my current car I've had for nearly 6 years and its 9 years old. I do have a weakness for motorcycles though...

I think is lamenting the fact that the watch he bought is worth half what he paid, while the watch he didn't buy is worth about two and a half times what it cost retail.

I've never viewed my watch as investments, though I'm glad they have retained their value. That said, the biggest depreciation I experienced was on my house I bought at the height of the market (2006).

You guys need to come to Australia where our car prices are at a premium due to lack of competition, right hand drive and mega taxes for luxury cars. Looking at our local car sales site, you can snap up a 2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti for $230K, with less than 6000 miles on the clock, that car new in this country, hold your seats was about $750K, in short over $100K depreciation per year for what is still essentially a brand new car barely run in. Do the maths, that is $2,000 a week, or $300 a day and that is before you service it, insure it or put gas in it. OUCH!!!!!!!!!

Watches on the other hand - I can sell my sub for twice what I paid for it years ago...

Not too often I buy something very expensive brand new.

I always buy second hand cars, as I'm fine with someone else taking the huge hit.

For example the M5, 175K euro new. 6 years later 54K. Now I wouldn't have wanted that 126.ooo euro hit!

My Bang & Olufsen stuff:
Beovision 9 TV new price 23.000 Euro, yes that's 23K for a 50" plasma.

I payed 3 years later 5K.
Beolab 5 speakers, 18K new, 2 years old 8K. I've had them for 5 years and I'd probably get around 10K for them now.

Same with watches. I've bought a few new, but most have been pre-owned.

Same here with the Ferraris...

A Ferrari FF is about 650K euro new. I don't want to know what it's worth after 5 years...
