You should wait to buy her a Rolex until she's your wife.
That way if things don't work out you can still get visitation on the weekends. |

A man should never buy a woman a watch, car, etc. until he has married her. In Japan, it is common to give and receive such a watch as an engagement gift...that I would agree to.

I guess I'm old fashioned but I'd give her a ring before a watch...even though the watch is a Rolex!!!

I say Go For IT! Buy her a Rolex!
Gift her with a nice Men's SS Datejust or the Airking. Women are wearing Men's watches. |

Totally depends on circumstances.
I think an expensive watch or car is a very personal gift, and you would have to have a significant amount of commitment invested with another person to gift items like that. On the other hand, "expensive" is a relative term, and marriage is no longer the only indicator of commitment between people these days. There has to be some correlation or ratio between the relative price of the gifts you give to others (based on your income) and the amount of time/commitment you've invested with the person. The more disposable income you have, you may be able to gift more expensive items with seemingly less time/commitment invested? /rambling. |

Disposable income is not a good measure. Net Asset Value is much better. You could be making a boat load of money every month, but you could also spend it immediately depending upon your cost of living and expenses.
Hey, if your net asset value is high enough, and the girl is hot enough, why not? ;-) On the other hand, she sure as heck better be appreciative. I've bought my wife gifts that cost $5 and gifts that cost $50,000. I think that I even made her a gift one time so it was free. No matter how small or extravagant the gift, I guarantee that she has always made me feel that she was touched, overwhelmed, and appreciative. I guess that's why I married her. :)

Sorry. It was gauche to throw around money numbers. I meant it more as a quick metaphor for the fact that I could make her something which doesn't cost money, and she'd be just as overjoyed at the gift. Both of us really do believe that it is the thought that counts more than the value. You don't want me to adopt you since I'd just make you presents that cost me nothing. :P I'm just a working stiff like the rest of us trying to make a living...

If your girlfriend would rather have the ~$10k Rolex rather than a ~$10k engagement ring, then you've probably got a problem and should abort mission ASAP. :P
LOL at the Pepsi GMT comment though. That's why I love this place. |

I bought my GF a Rolex after being together for about a year back in 2005. We stayed together and didn't get married until last Oct. It's your money and life. Do what you want. Not everyone feels the same about it. Rolex were a lot cheaper back then too.

Thanks! Although we are not engaged. This is just a "keep sweetie happy" ring. The engagement ring has to be much bigger...

You might want to tell her that since unless I'm mistaken she's wearing it on her ring finger of her left hand...

I bought my girlfriend this, kinda impulse buy. She wasn't overwhelmed, but she loves it. Been with her 6 years though.

With all kidding aside, traditionally, people tend to refer to push presents for one's wife, however girlfriend would qualify for that too right? My friend received her Rolex DJii as her push present from her husband, so I don't see why that wouldn't translate to girlfriend. Some have kids without feeling the pressure or desire to marry.

It depends on the situation, in most cases however I don't think I would.

Wifes and Rolexes are forever - I know some of you won't agree with the wife part.
Girl friends come and go - pun intended.

Do not buy a girlfriend a Rolex. Some cultures say that the first piece of jewelry you should buy for a girlfriend is an engagement ring. Wait to get married, then buy her the expensive stuff...trust me on this.
