Old clasp is very reliable and could care less if it looks good or not. I never look at the clasp unless its a real dressy watch with an expensive clasp. My sub is for everyday durability.

*Noted, though: due to a welded feature on the new clasps, they seem to have a higher percentage of breakage issues -- still small, but it's been documented. |

Just an observation... it seems to me that members that owns models with older tuna can clasps stand by their watch. There's nothing wrong with that... everyone is entitled to their opinion but just saying.................................

the tuna clasp is not as polished and solid feeling and pretty without a doubt... but it is functional without fault. the only caveat is that i am talking about the last incarnation of the tuna clasp that came on the 93250 bracelet (the 93150 had a weak spot for me, it was the back end of the clasp tended to snag and pop open the dive link on occasion) Quote:

Yeap they sure do look cheap for a £4000+ watch, but would I wanna put on a Tag Heuer? No.

To me "tuna" is a Seiko dive watch......I always lovingly refer to the old school clasps as "tinfoil clasps"................regardless, I still prefer the charm of the older watches, my watches have grown old w/ me......and at my advanced age.....I'll stick with and go to my grave with my lug holes, tinfoil clasps, rattly folded link oyster bracelets.....can I get a "bah humbug" brother curmudgeons!

Yeah, they looked and fely very cheap IMHO, now I know people on here say they're a tried and proven design, but so are Honda's, and that doesn't stop people from wanting BMW's....

Yes, good riddance. They should have been updated a long time ago...
Those clasps have no place on a 500 USD watch let alone on a 5000+ USD one...though I still like my 14060M. |

On my SD I like the subC clasp. It perfectly balances the watch, However If I was doing real work with it or going into the jungle or using it as a real tool watch, No Doubt about it I would want the old stamped clasp. My office adventures and comfort of daily wear, the new clasp is fine, for real Rolex work- NO.
On vintages, no way, no how stamped only. Keep your stinking drive by wire, paddle shifters and electronic nannies, connoisseurs are at play here. You nouveau smug wis enjoy your soulless wonders ;) |

Although I do vastly prefer the newer bracelets/glidelocks, a near perfect analogy is found in a product made by Sig Sauer, the P226. The original item used a stamped design, then later they went with a seemingly superior milled design, the trouble is, many believe the older stamped sheet metal design was the superior one, and minty examples command a premium over the newer milled variety.

My cheapo Sea Dweller 16600 falls off my wrist all the time.
Not a fan of $1000 bracelets and $800 bezels, especially when it's the same old 3135 movement. What are we paying for with these new models? I call Shenanigans. |

Yes yes they may have been a bit dated but you know what they just worked and for years this was the case. We cannot say the same for the newer clasps and I would suspect there will be more issues with the adjustments/welds and the like over time as we have already begun to see.
That being said I like the new clasps as well but will never hesitate buying something like a Rolex with a "tuna clasp" that just well works... In fact I just did

I love mine. Great design, light and reliable. For me Rolex is not going in the right direction anyway.

Please forgive my ignorance, but where does one acquire these new clasps?

I think they were the right clasps up until the late 80s or so, but they are very outdated now. I think the new clasps continue the tradition of Rolex durability, but they convey a greater sense of confidence, and feel like how a Rolex should (i.e. overengineered). Functionally, they did a good job, but there were weak spots and they weren't infallible. To be honest, I don't think I would own a Rolex with the old style clasp unless it was a vintage piece - the new clasps are just too good to want to back to it. I know there are those who love the old style clasps, and I respect that - they're just not for me
