Well, I guess they were wrong:)

It is about contrast, legibility and not anything else.

Rolex has taken their functional icon and turned it into an exclusive fashion novelty in my opinion to drive sales. Whether one likes how it looks is a matter of personal taste. My AD told me that they are very much in demand and that he can't get enough of them. I am guessing <1% of Submariners sold are ever used by divers. The watch model has become a cultural status icon that is now just a water resistant sports watch like the Daytona, Explorer, GMT and Milgaus. The diver's bezel is now just a decoration.

It's not my cup of tea, but if it makes an owner smile; that's what it's all about.

My $.02
Your information is not accurate Bob. Research dive watches or Doxa and you will discover that in the late 1960's Doxa hired a team of engineers along with divers to determine what color would be best for a dive watch underwater and ORANGE was determined to be the most visible!

Why do you think so many watch manufactures make orange dive watches?

As to the Hulk, it's not on my wanted list but happy for those who are enjoying theirs. I do think Rolex watches with green are hot...when you throw a splash of YG in the mix!

If its the later, whether you like the model or not remember you are posting on a Rolex forum to a thread where there are many owners of said model so not very tactful or respectful.

As one descends into water and daylight is filtered out, colours disappear in this order (corresponds with colour order in a rainbow): red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

That may be true but but actual visibility or readability is more complicated underwater than just filtration of a particular colors wavelength.

"Table 2-3 Colors That Give Best Visibility Against a Water Background

Water Condition Natural Illumination

Incandescent Illumination Mercury Light
Murky, turbid water of low visibility (rivers, harbors, etc.) Fluorescent yellow, orange, and red Yellow, orange, red, white (no advantage in fluorescent paint) Fluorescent yellow-green and yellow-orange
Regular yellow, orange, and white Regular yellow, white

Moderately turbid water (sounds, bays, coastal water)

Any fluorescence in the yellows, oranges, or reds Any fluorescence in the yellows, oranges, or reds Fluorescent yellow-green or yellow-orange
Regular paint of yellow, orange, white Regular paint of yellow, orange, white Regular yellow, white

Clear water (Southern water, deep water offshore, etc.)

Fluorescent paint, orange, yellow

Note: With any type of illumination, fluorescent paints are superior.

With long viewing distances fluorescent green and yellow-green are excellent.

With short viewing distances fluorescent orange is also excellent.
Source: NOAA (1979)"

What the engineers/divers discovered when tested was an orange dial offered the best READABILITY at depth verses other colors.

If that's good enough for Jacque Cousteau, its good enough for me!

I read somewhere in Rolex literature green was the next best contrast after black and white to look at under water this was one of the reasons green was chosen above red & orange and other colors. Also the exact shade of green took lots of research to get it right!

I had a M 2008 LV I loved the watch but I fell on hard times so had to sell just collected the new ceramic LV its gorgeous the green gold dial changes depending on the light it can look black sometimes. If I could afford it I would love a unworn 2004 LV and a unworn 2010V LV just to keep they will only go up in my opinion with a M 2008 LV to wear now and then with the ceramic LV I have.

Rolex Propaganda...Green is not the most visible with years of diving science from legends like Jacque Cousteau to back that up. Orange and red is always the color of choice for contrast in a diving instrument. Always has been. The green on the Rolex Sub is a homage to their companies colors. As nice as the green is, it has no diving connection regardless how they might try to spin it.

Its Awesome

Just fantastic. The dial can look black sometimes every time you look at the dial it looks different its the way light reflects off the green gold dial !!

Just bought one yesterday. My son is graduating from Law school next month and I plan to give him my Kermit version that i got on my 50th birthday. It is the only Rolex he has ever found desirable and it is because of the green bezel. I replaced it with the hulk and find the green dial very attractive and convinced myself that turning 60 last month and my son graduating was reason to celebrate and my wife went for it. Life is good with green on your wrist.
