Interesting point. Studies on professional thieves have shown that they can pick out people with lower self confidence just from the way they carry themselves walking down the street.

Unsafe. Cancel your trip, or, do not leave your hotel room FOR ANYTHING! While in your hotel room, make sure you place the mattress in front of the door when you're not sleeping on it.

What about CHUDs? A prominent study suggests that CHUDs prefer the taste of confident individuals.

Nobody's going to mess with you, when they know the other Village People are just a phone call away.

True. But there is in fact no shortage of wind around here.

I grew up in the suburbs but have lived and worked in downtown for most of my adult life. Bad things can happen anywhere but I can't say I've ever felt "unsafe" here.

I've been to what some might consider "bad parts of town" many times with a nice watch and suit on. Nobody around pays attention or cares.

You will be fine where you are going.

Enjoy the trip.

The data on CHUDs is inconclusive. Sample size was too small, and the CHUDs in the latest studies turned on the researchers, so the data was lost.

The leather glove is a nice touch. That way they know that you mean business and are ready to throw down. Good move!

My primary objective was just to get a general sense of Chicago (areas to avoid, helpful tips, etc.). I thought that I might as well ask on TRF as a precaution, but I had planned on wearing it. It was an honest question that I felt was worth asking. Thanks to everyone who gave helpful replies!

Understanding that everybody has their own level of tolerance to risk, there is no answer that will satisfy the OP's of these types of threads.

Like previously stated, if you must ask the question then perhaps they shouldn't wear it on this trip. I would wear any of my watches everywhere I go, including some seriously poor and questionably safe areas.

I don't flaunt it but I don't hide it either but I have never given it a second thought

I just got back from a week in New York City. I wore my GMT everywhere and no issues. Most people don't even know what you're wearing.

It baffles me how some people can afford a Rolex, yet lack enough common sense to make decisions like this (or can I wear my 300m Submariner in the shower?).

If the OP has doubts, maybe he should sell the Rolex and wear a Fossil watch. I hear they sell those at the airport.....
What's with all the DWC negativity here, things slow over there, or are you guys branching out?

I had to laugh at this article saying the people of Chicago nick named their city Chiraq as in Ch[icago]Iraq.

I feel for you and I understand why you asked. I'm a bit embarrassed by, and don't condone, some of the smartass answers you got here but that's what happens in public forums. You asked politely and in a non confrontational respectful manner. You should have received the same kind of answers. Sorry that's not what they all were.

I live in the loop and take public transit daily including the EL blue/red/brown lines and the metra wearing my pieces... You will be safe and have fun... don't stress it as it will ruin your trip.

In reality most non watch nerds are not going to notice your watch. If anything, they are looking at your choice of wardrobe and then making a rash judgement.

I was in NYC today in a short polo and on multiple subway lines. Nobody even gave a second glance. Actually, maybe one guy did. He was in a suit and has a sub.

Relax and just don't flaunt it wildly. Trust me it's "just" a rolex, many people are wearing 5 figure patek's and APs without hesitation. And again almost all will not notice

Ah Chicago, did my undergrad there. If you ever have the time head down to Bandera for a steak

As for the question, most other guys have got that covered!

Safe trip!

Very true. How you carry yourself makes as big of a statement as your Rolex. I've been wearing expensive jewelry everyday for years and haven't experienced any problems.

You make it sound like the average person is so vulnerable to a large criminal element that roams the streets of Chicago. Nonsense.
