Which Rolex for a 40 year old brother in law who is a lawyer?

First of all, very nice thought to buy him a rolex for a gift!

Does he already have a watch he wears regularly? That could give you an idea of the style or complication?

My picks would be Sub, GMT or Daytona depending on budget

Well Well! Took the suggestion of the TRF members and took him to an AD today and guess what? He has short-listed the GMT Master II 116710 BLNR aka the Bruiser/Batman and the Daytona SS White 116520. Now I have to take a call amongst these two because I'm the one who is gonna shell out the moolah! ;)

Oh yes! He very well knows that it's for him. After reading the suggestions here I took him to the AD saying that I wanted to buy one for myself and would like his take. He told me that if I were him he would go for the BLNR or the White SS Daytona. That's when I spilled the beans and told him that it was actually for him. He initially said that its unnecessary expenditure but after my convincing him he said that he would prefer any of the two mentioned above. Lucky him! Hahaha!

I would not get a 40 year old a Rolex. Odds are he is not a watch guy. If he was you would know which one he likes. He just would not appreciate it enough. i would spend rolex money on something he is into. Thats just me.

He ain't a watch guy but I want to give him something to mark this momentous occasion in his life. I know he will keep it forever and won't ever flip it. My 5 year old nephew too can enjoy it when it's eventually passed onto him. :)

For somebody that can't decide between two very different pieces like a SS White Daytona and a BLNR I would give him the BLNR for its versatility.

Just a suggestion, but you might want to start a new poll thread with these two options you just mentioned.

My vote would be for the white Daytona. I find them elegantly classic.

Guess because he is a lawyer he sees everything in 'black and white' so his reasoning was if it's a black dial then BLNR and if it's white then the SS Daytona.

He doesn't need any as he already possesses a collection of antique swords. He has around 37 of them and growing. An Indian sword can match or rather outdo a Samurai one. Thanks but no thanks! :)

What kind of lawyer? I am a corporate lawyer working out of a corporate office and so the more active models don't appeal to me. I personally love the new cellini models and so do my co-workers. Granted, we are all younger and don't care/know much about the history behind oyster models

I think if he's a lawyer running his own practice or doing something that's more with individual clients, that may be different.

He runs his individual practice therefore he is a litigation lawyer and has his own counsel practice and has to visit court daily.

Hmm the only input I can say here is Not-gold. Generally those visiting court don't want to draw attention to jewelry in front of the judge/jury (subconscious vibes of jealousy, that you dont need the money, or are flashy or whatever)

In law school mock trial, I heard a story of a lawyer who put on a digital casio and ill-fitting suit for trials haha :). Not sure if it's true though. good luck!
