Wear it. Enjoy it.
Be aware of your surroundings and play it safe, if necessary.

I wear my 116718 in NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, etc. all the time.
Never had a problem.

Safe to wear President's Rolex in Chicago?

It depends. I went to school in Hyde Park and I sure would not have been comfortable in some of the surrounding areas.

But if you have been there for five years you should already know the answer to this question, and know where and when it might be an issue. So my money is on troll - all the tell tale signs - inherited Rolex, just joined, is it safe, etc.

i wore patek calatrava 34mm yellow gold and oyster perpetual 34mm yellow gold on the streets of são paulo without any problems...

keeping in mind it's a much dangerous city than chicago...

i go everywhere with my datejust and never had a problem, neither had with tag, seamaster or even corum white gold diamond bezel,so white metal watches are not a problem...

when you have an all gold watch like a day-date,you have to double your attention, try to wear long sleeve shirts, and sometimes casually put the watch in your pocket...

but it's in the end all about where you walk and how much you pay attention to your surroundings!!

I've noticed in my career that theft of cellphones ( or cars ) is probably the most predominant form of crime. I'm not saying watch theft DOESN'T happen, but I can assure you crime today is focused more on the electronics. I would be more worried wearing an Apple Watch than a Rolex.

The other way I can compare crime and fear of having a watch stolen is this: let's take dog attacks for example. If you show fear, a dog is more likely to attack you.

If you show fear of having a watch stolen, you will probably be touching your watch more, looking at it, trying to cover it. These will stick out to the "bad guys," and you will have a higher chance at getting it taken.

When I'm working a beat on the streets, if I drive or walk by a criminal it is blatantly obvious if he has drugs or a gun on him. Sub consciously they will automatically touch the pocket or area where the stuff is hidden.

Same is going to for the watch. If you are that afraid, when you see a "shady character" you may touch your watch which in turn will draw THEIR attention to the watch.

Get it insured and then if somebody wants to take it from you by force, just let them have it!

I plan on getting it insured. While it is being serviced we are going to ask them to also appraise it and then as soon as I get that appraisal I plan on calling State Farm up and adding it onto my renters insurance before I even get back to Chicago with it.

Just use your head and you'll be fine. Mind your surroundings. I'd probably keep it under my sleeve out in public but that's about it.

I just laughed out loud at this one! I'll go visit his house on the south side of the city and ask him in person next time he comes to Chicago.

I doubt very much he will be spending much time in Chicago after his retirement, look for him in NY.

Even with insurance I probably wouldn't do it. Never know what desperate people might do.

Can't say I have much chi town experience but have worn my SS Rolex all over NY/NJ subways system. Be aware of your surroundings and if by some chance you do get targeted, cough it up. It's just a watch.

I love all the internet cowboys who think they are going to commit murder over thier wristwatch.

As a rule of thumb for me is don't have anything nice you can't afford to lose. Insure it and enjoy.

I presume most large cities have high crime areas. I work in downtown LA, and when I had to walk through some sketchy blocks (we have a large homeless population) I am careful that my watch is covered with my sleeve, but I am watching myself, my purse, etc.

I had to go to San Franscisco a few years back for work, and the group I was with insisted on waking to our destination through the the Tenderloin district. I was very cautious for myself, and kept my Rolex covered with my sleeve.

One had to be generally cautious of one's surroundings. That being said my Rokex is insured for full replacement value, because if God forbid I'm ever held up for it, the watch goes. People get robbed in the nicest areas, too.
