I received mine last week. Honestly, it's a wash for me. I use enough benefits to offset the fee but just barely. If I didn't travel and get value, I'd have a green card. You can charge just as much. They base your spend on a number of factors and I know people who spend 30-50k a month on their green some months. And I know a guy who got shut down trying to spend 12k(for a Rolex :)) on his platinum.

I don't think the card color (green/gold/plat) affects spending ability at all.

Personally, I am buying all my flights out of pocket, so the 5x points on airfare is great. Most of the other travel benefits
are not valuable to me.

Right, that is what I meant to convey. Color doesn't affect your spending, history and financial ability does.

The 5x on points is great and I too pay for my travel but I fly almost exclusively Alaska and I get triple miles putting flights on Alaska visa plus double miles being an MVP gold. I use Amex for various travel bennies. I picked up a Chase Sapphire Reserved card last year when they had the 100K point promo. Now its a balancing act of how to maximize benefits to justify 2 cards with high fees. One will end up going next year, just not sure which one yet.

You're right, the no pre-set limit applies to all their charge cards and is based on historical spend and what they believe to be your ability to pay. The only thing that changes between the cards are the cardmember benefits.

In 1997, I charged an entire season suite at Coors field ($200k) for work on my green Amex instead of my corporate card so I could get the points. Needless to say, Amex had me get on the phone to ask a bunch of questions before approving it.

Does anyone know when these will come to Europe?
I called to ask and they were not aware of any new cards.
Here they charge 700€ annually for the platinum, its the least they could do

Wondering the same. I called the platinum card service here in Sweden and they didn't even know if we would get them here at all.

It's $699 CAD per year over here. Quite a savings.

On the subject of charges it is highly recommended that you simply call them, as I did a month ago, and say that you are needing to charge something over and above your historical spending patterns. I've never had an issue when I did that.

Is it safe to wear your Rolex while handling one of these? Theoretically, the metal could scratch your watch.

In all seriousness, they did a good job with the roll-out / card design. I feel a bit self-conscious using it for in person transactions, but hopefully that fades.

This is a pretty good write up of the current premium cards on the market and how they compare.

It really depends on what you're looking to get out of the card. As an example, while most of my cards are with Chase and Amex, I also have the Citi Prestige card which netted me about $2.5k benefit from their 4th night free perk last year. As for your question between Amex and Reserve - The Reserve card fits my spending better for three reasons: Restaurants make up a larger portion of my spend these days than airfare; I already have the hotel status you receive with the Amex; The travel credit from Amex is only for incidental fees which I rarely incur.

Thank you for this. Very helpful. I'm a bit of a loyalist, so I'm sticking with the AMEX Platinum for now. I just received my new card in the mail, and it's quite impressive.

In any event, I don't want to pay for both cards, and while I may get slightly better benefits from the CSR because of the way I spend, I'm going to stick with AMEX for now. Also to note, IMO, AMEX concierge and travel departments have been very helpful and reliable, so that is worth something.

Thanks again for your thoughtful feedback.

Echo this sentiment. Concierge just got me a reservation at a fully-booked up restaurant in Vegas....the intangibles make all the difference to me.

NYT claims that AMEX is losing the "snob war" to Chase

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/04/1...e-reserve.html

Recently spoke to a young guy (25) who was just transferred from Goldman Sachs nyc to GS hong kong. He says everyone in his analyst class had switched to the chase sapphire reserve. Sounds like Chase grabbed a lot of valuable customers with big earning potential.

Still waiting on them to offer it in Business Platinum. I know it's coming. Personal is gold premier rewards. No point in having 2 platinums

One things that sucks about this card is that it tends to limit or negatively impact the sensors of other cards that are placed near to it in your wallet. For example, my key card to get into building(s) may or may not always work when I "tap" my wallet. No issue before the all metal Platinum card

Is this about Platinum, platinum watch ? lol
Ive had a black metal Marriot card for years I don't use the benefits that Amex offers so not worth the annual fees
