My wife set a very high limit for me to select a birthday watch. Could have been a precious metal watch welll within my limit. I went to the AD expecting to buy the SD43 that was being offered. I didn’t like the Sea Dweller, looked at a bunch of watches, and selected the blue dial Yacht Master. I don’t flip watches so resale value is meaningless as is the model name. I tried on the Sub Date but it just didn’t fit well. The Yacht Master looked and felt great. It feels a lot like my GMT II.

I think the 40mm YM with blue dial is beautiful. It's too close in size, shape and dial to my Hulk. I went for a Z-Blue because it is different and looks bigger because of the thinner bezel. Each to our own. With unlimited funds, three arms and more days in the week I'd have a 40mm YM.

I have to agree. The raised numeral bezel and case shape just doesn't do it for me. Although the one with blue dial is sharp, as I love blue dials.

It's a dressed up Submariner, more expensive but without the best parts like a ceramic insert (or even aluminum), brushed center links and glidelock clasp, so it's a nice watch but not for me.

The 16622 is the only Rolex I've bought twice. Circa 2000 they were a "hot new release" like SS's still are today. My first Daytona 16520 came along and I needed the funds for it and sold the Yachtmaster. A year later I was buying another one that I kept a few years. I like the new color dials but that sparkly one on the first edition is hard to beat.

If you like it, it might be one of the better buys right now in the Rolex lineup. DavidSW had a blue dial on his site with warrantee card dated last month for about 2k off the list price. If you like it, it's a fantastic deal IMO.

1. Bezel=Scratchy scratchy
2. Due to the platinum bezel there's just too much metal on this watch. Especially with a rhodium/silver dial it looks even more metal-y. People love the YM in everose gold, because it has some contrast in color due to the black and rose gold. There is almost no contrast with the steel YM's and therefore people see it as a big hunk of white metal without much going on.

I have always enjoyed wearing my 16623. I realize the TT and serti dial are not everyones cup of tea. But I enjoy it and it is comfortable to wear.

It looks nice, but I hate how the bezel ages. Looks dirty, oily.

Two words: Platinum bezel.

When I first looked at rolex several years ago and knew nothing, I absolutely drooled over the blue dial YM. To this day, I think it's the best blue dial watch on the market...... fast forward to today-- I can't stand the bezel, because of how it picks up scratches so easily against the backdrop of a polished bracelet.........it just doesn't fit, at least for me.
It's not a dressier watch, and it's not tough enough to wear daily, even though my friend does exactly that with his and doesn't care about all the scratches.
I really like the matte black everose gold version a lot, but not enough to spend that much on one. I would rather have a PM Daytona for a few thousand more.

The platinum bezel is one of the things I like the most. I beat my watches up and can't find any scratches on the bezel. I thought the platinum made it more resistant to scratches? :

Tried the blue at an AD, ultimately selected the Bluesy, but I thought that the YM was very attractive.

They look like flashy subs, lack the classic character of a sub and are overpriced.
The newer ones with the regatta, 10 min countdown are awesome for one reason and one reason only, if you actually have/own a yacht that you actually actively race competitively. Other than that, they are pretty lame and seem like Rolex filler.

As several posters have already said, the Yacht-Master is perceived by many as a less capable Sub with a bit more bling, a dressy vibe to it and a considerably higher price. Where I live the latest MSRP back in 2016 for the 116622-002 (platinum dial) was no less than 11,350 euros compared to 7,800 euros for the black Sub, a whopping 45% more, putting the YM in steel Daytona's territory (talking retail, not secondary market absurdity).

Let's face it very few people would rather have a YM over a Sub or a steel Daytona. There is less perceived "value" to it. For a lot less you get a "better" watch, for the same money you get a chrono complication, both alternatives being super iconic, whereas the YM is almost a nobody in Rolex history. So really who in his/her right mind would pick the YM?

That'd be me. Why? Because "listen to your heart when he's calling for you" (Roxette, 1988). The 5 digit monochrome platinum dial was my grail since the early 2000s. However, as much as I loved the 5 digit and the latest 6 digit, I couldn't see myself paying retail for it. Luckily, the low popularity of the 116622 allowed me to score one NOS at 33% off from an Italian grey dealer three years ago. At that price I just couldn't resist.

A couple of shots taken last week, an hour to 30 min. before sunset.

Wow, that looks nice. Very dressy.

Can I ask where you got the bracelet? I was thinking of trying to get the newer clasp or new bracelet (Rolex authentic of course if I can find one)for my 2002 YM.

It's a great looking watch but as it doesn't have a ceramic bezel it suffers in popularity a bit as this is a very sporty forum. As for resale you can buy this at a good discount and so a small loss on resale only, I lost about £700 after a year, around 10%.

Kind of a cross between a Sub and a Daytona. The full yellow gold 16628 is (was) absolutely obscene - I love it.
They need more looking after or tend to look a bit ropy after years of carefree wear. Whereas a Sub just looks cool whatever hell you put it through.
