I have a sub and DJ41. I agree with some of the others about the DJ41 being more of a dress watch. Mine has a fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet so it’s definitely more dressy in my opinion. I love the feel of it on my wrist. It’s really light when compared to the sub. I sometimes wear the DJ41 casually so that it gets more wrist time but the sub gets more wear overall because it’s great for every day wear.

It’s a matter of which watch makes your heart sing! If the Sub is the one that makes your heart skip a beat, then it is with the wait and the $$$.
You can marry many different people. But, do you wait for the one that you are truly in love with? Or, do you marry the one you can get more quickly/easily? If your true love is readily available and costs less, then congratulations! Go For It! But, if you feel like you are settling... then be patient & wait! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Most non TRF would choose a DJ over a Sub and vice versa.

Having owned both (got rid of my DJ last year), I feel the Sub is an everyday watch. I can wear it with jeans, shorts or a suit. I think it just has an overall better look. I agree with others that the DJ is a more elegant, dress watch. I only wore mine if I was getting dressed up, never with jeans. I have to admit though, the light, jubilee bracelet did feel great on the wrist.
As everyone else has said, it comes down to what YOU like. Buy whichever one speaks to you or you'll never be happy with it.

Because the Sub is probably the most iconic and well known watch made by man and the DJ is not.

If you can only own one Rolex, the Sub is the way to go in steel models. Far more useful than any DJ and wears with anything.

Honestly, when I was looking to buy my first Rolex, I never even considered a DJ despite the fact that they were readily available.
Plus, I only had to wait 8 weeks to get my Sub, so it wasn't exactly a hassle. I do like DJs, and I plan on getting one someday, but I just don't see them being in the same category. |

Why go through trouble and expense of getting Sub (v. DJ)?
DJ loses value, Sub gains value
DJ plain, Sub iconic DJ has PCLs, Sub has brushed DJ is 36mm, Sub is 40MM DJ has normal case, Sub has super case DJ are easy to get, Sub is more rare DJ gets lost in the crowd, Sub stands out DJ is a dress watch, Sub is sports watch DJ looks good with dress clothes, Sub looks good with anything DJ has non-locking clasp, Sub has Glidelock with Fliplock Just a few of the reasons. I’d argue, why buy a DJ, when you could for only $2k more get a Sub. Of course, I say why get a Sub when you can get a DSSD? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I love the look of a Sub and dislike the look of a DJ.

I did not hesitate at all when I got a Submariner.
I am still hesitating about getting a Datejust. To tide me over, I got an OP39. Haven't thought about a Datejust since. Except when I see beautiful wrist shots of a Datejust, then I want one! |

I am not an old man, nor am I a middle manager and I chose a TT DJ41 over a TT sub. Like them both a lot, but the DJ was what I wanted.
A lot of people will say the sub is an icon etc, but I would argue there are 3 Rolex configurations that would be equally considered as icons: - SS black face sub - TT DJ - YG Day-date To me, those 3 epitomize Rolex as probably the most widely, publicaly known and unquestionably Rolex models. |

Because non-sporty people pretend to be more sporty when wearing a sporty Rolex
DJs are cool, just like sport ss Rolex's. |

Because the sub works brilliantly with jeans and a polo shirt and although the DJ wears ok with jeans it’s primarily a business watch. TBF I think one of each is all anyone could ever realistically “need.”

Of those, only that close friend really has lots of discretionary money (a prereq for Rolex generally); the others are a bit like flight instructors, generally not suffering but not well off. But most of them, including Mr. Hard-Core Tech, wear non-Rolex watches (as I said, usually Seikos) AND a dive computer when diving. It makes no sense to me, but it's never occurred to me to ask why. I'll ask several tomorrow if you're curious. Yesterday I was in the shop chatting with an instructor about teaching lubber lines and indexes. I pointed at his beat up watch as having an unused index, and we talked about it for a bit. He said it only has to keep time and be readable under water, not be pretty. The timing was lucky; I don't consider compasses all that interesting either. |

You know, I quite like your list, even though I disagree...
They both seem to hold value pretty well. I've never heard DJ called "plain" before. I generally think of it as the more Rolex-typical look, while the Sub has tons of clones and is pretentious if you're not actually physically active. DJ is available with oyster or jubilee. My DJ41 is, well... probably a 39. It doesn't wear like a 41. But it's not 36! And it wears much better, thinner, than a Sub. (Fair disclosure: My wrists are not Neanderthal-massive.) Reference above wrists statement. Sub is less comfortable under shirt-cuffs. Not sure why that would be a draw. My DJ41 is very hard to find. Or at least it was for me. Rolesor Fluted Jubilee Dark Rhodium Stick. Some, such as the Wimbledon, are easy to find. The dateless black-dial SS Sub 114060 isn't that hard to find... and is a lot cheaper to boot! Completely disagree... depending on the DJ and the Sub. A fluted DJ on Jubilee does not get lost in a crowd. The average Sub is mistaken for an Invicta or Swiss Legend. My kinda-father-in-law loves his Invicta near-Sub and is very open about it not being a Rolex but looking like one. (It does, to the average person, and is obviously not one, to the rest of us.) Nobody makes a Fluted/Cyclopsed/Jubilee DJ clone. Relevance? Quote:
I haven't had an accidental opening, but I do miss a locking clasp. But the Glidelock/Fliplock... when do you personally ever need to add two inches to your wrist? You don't even dive, do you? Quote:
I really enjoyed your post. This was all in good fun. I have around a dozen watches made of various alloys of Unobtainium... the only Rolexi I had any interest in were the Milguass and the DJ... and then the 41 came out. Love it! And I wear it with anything, anywhere except the gym. Not exclusively, but it's about 35-40% of my daily rotation, easily #1. If you feel the same way about your Sub, that was absolutely the right watch for you. And, for my pseudo father-in-law, the Invicta is the right choice. Love the one you're with. |

Why do people buy an E class Mercedes when the C Class does exactly the same?
