A complete miss for me. The partnership with BMW is a half step and Toyota does not need to do that. They have proven that they can create great performance cars. I was hopeful that they would take the Lexus LC500 and make a Toyota version. This would be like the Lexus LX570 and the Toyota Land Cruiser. The LC500 is a serious design and performance machine and Toyota could have done much better than the new Supra. A picture of my LC500.

Beautiful , wish I could own that one, but as Bas pointed out already double price in the NL.

Not sure about in the UK but here in the US 335 hp is extremely under-powered especially for a "performance" car. Plus it's not exactly little. As I mentioned earlier it weighs more than a Corvette that has a massive V8.

The typical Chevy Impala or Ford Fusion rental car here makes over 300 horses

I think if Toyota could have raised the hp and torque to a little over 400, made it a bit lighter, and offered it in manual which is cheaper and would have gotten the starting cost down a couple grand then it would have been a winner.

That's because the 2JZ-GTE was 'over-built' from the factory, which allowed for a lot of tuning without changing the internals. I seriously doubt the new engine is 'over-built'.

3 litre turbo charged giving 335 bhp returning 0-60 in 4.3 secs is a powerful car in any country, 400 bhp plus is for freak cars.

it will handle like its on rails, its a great car.

I don't know where 335HP is "extremely underpowered," but, more important than that is Power-to-weight ratio. 0-60 in the low-mid 4 second range is no slouch.

That’s what I was thinking. Even a 370z or a base mustang is over 300 ponies with option for manual. I guess the mark IV was just too good of a car and got my expectations up.

Let's look at some other performance cars in the $50k's:

Shelby GT350: 526 hp
Corvette Stingray: 460 hp
Challenger SRT 392: 485 hp
Audi RS3: 400 hp
Camaro SS: 455 hp
Infiniti Q60: 400 hp
Charger SRT: 485 hp
BMW M2: 405 hp

All of these make at least 400 hp which is why I think that should have been the goal for this car

I’m sure it’ll handle great and give out blistering lap times since the car is designed in Europe and Japan.
In America HP is more important for bragging rights and drag racing.

It weighs almost 1000 pounds more than a Corvette. That makes it a heavy weight. Beautiful car but it needs the HP.

Camaro ZL1 weighs less too.

Dodge Challenger Hellcat weighs in at about the same as the LC500.

Ford GT350R weighs less as well.

Or am I misreading the specs on the LC500?

A friend had a 350 in an old Austin Healey 3000. It would eat almost any car on the road. Power to weight is what tell the story.

Historically the Supra has seated 2+2. I have nothing against lighter less powerful cars. My S2000 is the most fun car I’ve had for pure entertainment and is has all the torque of three angry hamsters. The Lotus Elise didn’t even crack 200bhp IIRC but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun.

The car in question today is the Supra. Not motivating me to buy one and it would appear I’m not alone.

but there is much about cars today that makes me not want to buy, the designs, the over use of computers, the over abundance of gadgets, the being told i have to have turbo instead of NA, the ridiculous quest for unecessary power that cannot be used,

its why people love old cars, the simplicity.

I wonder if there is a market to build a basic sports car with just an emphasis on looks, speed and handling, no computers, no toys, a radio and heater and manual window winders, and thats all..... i wonder.

I've wondered the same thing for years. Most people don't use or even know how to use the majority of the technology in their new cars anyway and when something goes wrong it's expensive to fix.

Plus for a fun "nice weather" or weekend car you don't need heated steering wheels/seats and the other extras anyway.

I'm sure there is a market, I just don't know how many others feel the same way.

The difficult part would be to find the right balance of things that people want vs don't want to pay for. I mean there is the Polaris Slingshot but some people might want a roof.

i once had an sc, it was perfect in the basic department, the only thing that let it down was its power windows and power wing mirrors, it had no power steering but was easy to drive.

I know that nowadays you would be unable to avoid air-bags and abs etc, but a truly basic sports car that is designed for the owner to fix and repair, to be devoid of all hardware would be like a breath of fresh air to me.

If i get out of my car and the lights are still on i dont want an alarm to tell me this etc etc etc.
