I am not adding to my collection anytime soon as I believe I now have every Rolex i want. It is a dangerously expensive hobby if you lust after them and have the means to buy . I have let go of a few only to buy them back . Not selling , not buying .

I am not an addict or a collector.
I do own 6 nice watches: 2 rolex, 2 omega's (one of which is a 1947 Seamaster which I inherited) a Tudor gmt, and a Heuer SE chronograph . I am simply said 'a watch lover' and enjoy wearing, researching and learning about these wonderful mechanical timepieces.... |

The key is not to buy pieces you do not intend to keep a while. Harder said than done. But it is important on models which take severe depreciation.

Started with a small Speedy triple date, then got a GMT 2?and discovered it was a 3186 so I naturally went into the rabbit hole of various versions.
So I focussed on the last versions of Sport models as they are a bit harder to get. A kind of to keep the “pleasure of hunting” a bit longer. Then moved to AP, and Blancpain after that, followed by FP Journe. Now I am aiming at Patek, Breguet and ALS. Every purchase is more and more expensive. Not sure I can contain myself. Addiction you say ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

A high percentage of your total wealth is watches? Not a great idea in my opinion

Very interesting discussion and nice stories. I really feel this, l was looking for one Rolex, the minute l got, started looking for another. My rationale was to have one for every day and another for dress up events. Now that I have 2 and a 3rd on the way, my total goal is 6.
I personally feel that the lack of the SS is fueling this hunt, I entered Rolex world last year, not sure if this would be the same if you go to AD and find all watches you want. I personally feel that Rolexes keep better value when compared to cars ( some retaind value) and fashion, shoes ( no value at all). Life is short, enjoy! |

I can ID with the OP's premise; I've come close but after selling 18 and saving only three I feel like I've g=come back from the edge. Toned down my purchases to something more affordable.

I make sure to keep the cost of the total collection under what my car is worth...so I just sold my pickup bought a new BMW.

Well I got to this threat by searching for addiction on the forum.....
I started about 20 years ago with having my grandfather’s Omega brought back to life. I started collecting Omegas heavily. Mostly vintage. Got rid of most of the vintage and then moved on to more contemporary Omega. Kept those, had a kid and backed off for a couple of years. Over the past 5 years in go in an out. Have sold a few bought bought more. Something usually gets me back in. Like I need to buy a gift for someone and then I am reignited for a few months. That never ends without me getting something. This time it was turning 50. Still a few weeks to go. I wanted to buy a gold watch. Seemed like the right self-gift without a doubt. I mean what else would I get for me for my 50th. Low and behold after today I’ll will have bought 4 watches maybe 5 depending on auction. Not planned. I feel pretty compelled. I got up to pee last night (I guess that comes with 50) and thought of the watch I had out and put it on and went back to sleep with it. I would never admit to anyone I know much I have in my collection. Sounds bad right.... |

What makes it easier today is that the Rolex market is doing so well. My main concern would be snatching a lot of hot pieces today, then seeing them drop in the next couple years. Kinda like the bitcoin craze. Hope the Rolex bubble doesn't burst. Eh, whatever happens, at least they'll hold up nicer over the years than tulips

I've filled my mechanical watch box. Now it's one in one out and I can't really think of any that I would replace.

Last year, I purchased a medium sized Pelican case that can hold 6 watches. I told myself I would not purchase another case. At the moment, I own 3 pieces (2 Rolex, 1 Patek), with 3 more on my wishlist. After that, I plan to start a one in, one out policy.
From a financial standpoint, I try to only spend what I can afford to lose. Rolexes do tend to hold their value but before any purchase, I ask myself : if this watch were to lose most or all value, would I be financially stable and mentally content with the purchase? |

It's interesting how I can spend X amount on one piece 5 times but cannot spend X amount times 5 on one.
So, I guess that makes me a collector? |

That was me for a while, but I kept graduating. It started with, “I could never spend more than $200 on a watch...”. I’m currently at, “I could never spend more than $20k on a watch...”. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Why is collecting an issue, for some it is art, others cars, others real estate. The only test as to whether it is out of hand is whether the spend is more than can be afforded.

People buy 60 k cars that they sell or trade for 15 k a few years later. You buy 8 k watch and sell it for same money or more years later Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
