I have no problem with, or with the quest for a birth year watch. That said, the difficulties involved in determining the exact year (not the least, the month) of production/sale is tricky, as many experts have pointed out here. For me, I’ve always wanted one (1966, in my case) for several reasons. I’ve owned a car from ‘66, several guitars from ‘66, and art and photos from ‘66, and The Beatles’ Revolver came out in ‘66. But, moreover, for those of us born in that year and who are fans of Submariners, it’s a bit easier for several reasons. It was the last year gilt dials we’re produced on Subs (and GMTs, Explorers, etc) and while there may have been some bleed over into ‘67, it’s a pretty safe bet that if you find one w a 66 case back (from any quarter) and an appropriate serial number, AND a gilt dial, it’s not from 1965, especially w a 66 caseback. Add papers dated to ‘66 and there’s a good bit of confidence you can have saying it’s from that 1966.
Plus, gilt dials on their own are so frickin cool-looking. |

I had this sickness and i recovered after buying 3 1675 from 1972, the last one is my favorite, now I have 3 watch that looks almost the same. I am enjoying it but i am not sure it worth the effort…

I just recently picked up this 1982 birth year watch. An unpolished 18038 with factory diamond vignette/degrade dial, and original hands. The fact that its my birth year was simply a nice coincidence.

I was in the hunt for a birthday watch for over 8 years. I was originally looking for a 16750 and actually came across one in full set and excellent conditions but at the time I didn’t have the funds. I was also born in 1983. Recently I was lucky enough to acquire a 5513 in full set from original owner in great conditions. I couldn’t be happier with this find and particular piece. It’s now my daily wearer.
