if i had the money....to pick between a patek and BMW.......i would probably go for the watch, the car will get obsolete...depreciate drastically in value....and will need to be replace after a while, plus the car will attract far much more attention....when u get a nice watch, i believe that you buy it for yourself....for you to enjoy...so it doesnt matter what other people think....and many times....no one realizes what watch you are wearing or its significance, and that could also be the point if getting a nice watch...its little more "low profile" - than zipping around in benz or bentley....as long as you know what you have and yur happy with it...then yur the king of your own castle.....and thats all that matters......

I think some people look at it as a status symbol and others just enjoy a nice timepiece. I am just a nut like the rest of you and have a watch problem.

Funny you said that. Today my 18yo son said he wants a MIG to fly. Apparently for a cool $25m one can buy a MIG in Russia, get it certified and parked at the local airport. Well, he's got his dreams all dreamed up so let's wait and see. Anything is possible nowadays.

Me too. . . Almost. They see my 14.5-lb Wilier LeRoi full Campagnolo Record road bike on the road, my 2006 BMW M3 coupe around town, and figure I like quality engineered items. It works, as I'm a mechanical engineer.

I buy Rolexes because they are great watches. The money does not come into the equation. If you want to look flash, then Patek is the way to go.

In Asia, airline staff, business owners, restaurant staff, cops etc. all look at your watch and some even your tie. So having the right watch and tie is very important.

I didnt buy mine for a status symbol, my family knows what I have, but I bought it because I love the watch, the look and feel of it, and it's also functional (GMT IIc)

I don't know who "they" are, but if it were me, I'd think, bicycle and another BMW and nothing else would cross my mind. Most status items exist that way only in the mind of the owner.

Hermes, Guy Laroche, E Zegna and so on.

A good designer tie in this years design and width.

These Asian, they spend hours in department stores memorizing the colours, widths etc.

You can start out a little cheaper. Training cost is around $100,000 from a company in Texas, and if you have less than 1,000 hours you will need a LOA from the FAA. My advice is to get the two seater. They do use a lot of JP and tend to be a tad loud for most airports. A blast to drive, but had a nasty tendency to stall/snap spin in high g turns. Freight not included.
