Keep it and respect your mutual decision with your wife. If its smooth/oyster it is literally the most casual Datejust out there. Order a jubilee bracelet from your same AD to change it up. And ask them about getting a Sub.
But trust me nobody cares one bit about your watch. And a Sub will always attract more attention IMHO. Enjoy the DJ. Its a classic Rolex. |

Go to the AD where you picked up the watch and ask to be put on the list for a sub. As others have said, the sub is flashy in its own way with the ceramic bezel.
Once you have the sub in hand decide what to do with the DJ. Given the sentimental value of the DJ, your buyers remorse might quickly turn to sellers remorse if you sell to hastily. Personally, I think a sub and a DJ is a great combo, and although I own a sub and an explorer, it’s likely that a DJ will be my next Rolex. You’d have one for every day wear and one for occasional wear. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

DJ41 Buyer's Remorse - Flip into a Sub?
I am a fan of DateJust and rhodium dial, but nothing sucks more than owning an expensive watch that you don’t fully appreciate. Trust me I know, back in 2003 my wife pushed me away from buying my dream watch ( a readily available Pepsi at the time) to a black dial DateJust and was the worst feeling.
You don’t enjoy the watch, tell your wife that you know she wants you to have something you enjoy, and you are just not enjoying this watch as you should. Sell the watch yourself (from my past inquiries, ADs and trusted sellers will offer you at least 30% below market value) and move on and buy a used Sub while waiting for a new one from AD. 1. Keep the watch, it's not that flashy, and a Sub is much more identifiable as a "Rolex" than your watch.
2. Private selling of your watch is not without pearl. Do a search, even here on TRF, and read about the Rolex owners that have been the victims of criminal rip off's trying to sell a watch themselves. 3. If you seriously want to get rid of it, go online to a number of trusted grey dealers and see what they will give you for the watch in cash. |

Here's my view:
This is your first luxury watch in this price-range so anything that's just the least bit shiny is going to look super blingy in your eyes looking down on it. Tust me when I say this, nobody notices. Nobody cares. The watch isn't more shiny than anything else out there. The typical "Fashion watch", whether it be Michael Kors, Hugo Boss or whatever is just as polished, just as "blingy", you just don't think about noticing it because well, it's not a Rolex that's on your wrist :-) |

If a watch does not work, it does not work. You know and the key is to act and get what you want. A private sale can be a nightmare and you can be risking life and limb depending on the circumstances. I have done them and it is not worth the rub when it comes to the additional money based on circumstances. Contact some of our Trusted Sellers here on TRF and see what you can get for your watch and what they will take for a new six digit Submariner or the last generation six digit. The five digits where OK when that was all we had but Rolex has done a lot of upgrading in everything from the movement to case to bracelet and the Glide lock clasp is a world beater. Your watch is just going to lose value in the next year and if you will not wear it or are not comfortable with it then the," keep it for a year," is not the right course. Go get your Submariner and enjoy it. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

How much of this is just plain buyer's remorse and might recur with the Sub? I'm in the camp of keeping it for a while before deciding. What is you buy the Sub and feel the same? There's some karma attached to this one as a gift from your wife, even if you helped choose it. If you don't like it for real after giving it a decent chance, then swap it. The best scenario - just buy the Sub also whenever circumstances are right for you -even if that takes a while. They will make a great pair and you retain all the good memories. Also, I agree with all the others - a DJ is not bling, except the rare garish iced out ones. The rest are just a nice all purpose watch and fly under the radar.

You will take a hit regardless if you trade or sell to a grey. Selling privately can be a nightmare. Enjoy the DJ, it’s a great watch. Buy the Sub later, it’s a great one-two combo!

I would think you will lose more than 1K on the watch if you paid retail and tax.
As stated, re-sale prices are only that offers and all re-sellers have to buy their watch inventory at much lower prices (wholesale) otherwise they would go out of business. Best advice is to keep the watch as your wife suggested for a year and go from there. |

Keep it, give it some time. Add a Sub eventually. They make a perfect 2-watch combination.

Keep it and add the Submariner at a later date.
IMHO you have a beautiful reference and to boot, it’s from your wife! I also think you’ll get comfortable wearing it in any situation. IMHO the Submariner is about on par in terms of being noticed, and besides, what does that really matter? Save up my friend |

I would keep it and add the Sub. This questions has been asked: Is it fluted. Go back to the same AD - they should be able to get you a Sub date.

You could put your name down for the Sub of your choice and when you get the call you can see them side by side. This will give you some time with your DJ to see how that goes.
I'm not bothered by the sunburst dial of my watch but if I had the option to get a solid color dial at the time I would have. Sunburst is fun most of the time but I can get tired of it occasionally. |

Have you considered putting a leather strap on the DJ41? It might tone it down enough so as to not appear too blingy. Unfortunately all Rolexes these days appear to max out on the bling front, which I don't personally like.
Good luck with what you decide |

Keep it, and save up for a Sub. You'll have a great two-watch combo (dress and sport; different dial colors and markers) plus the added bonus of marital harmony.

Yeah, I feel your pain. I just could never really fall in love with any of the DJ's I've ever had...and I've had several over the years, before I wised up and realized one just wasn't destined to end up in my collection.
Don't beat yourself up about it. Flip it into whatever it is your heart desires...and don't look back. |

Just buy a five-digit sub and sell the DJ41. You’ll be happy with the sub, and I think the five-digit is a tad more under the radar.

Keep it. Get the Sub later.
I'd wear it to work too if I were you, but I think everyone feels as if they can't wear their luxury watches in certain situations. So don't worry about that. I actually have an Apple Watch that I throw on from time to time. |

I have a 36mm DJ and new subC date. My DJ is oyster and smooth so my Sub has gotten most of my wrist time (especially since new). That said the DJ is still a wonderful watch and will get wear when I get over the honeymoon phase with the Sub. Was my daily for 2 years. On the fence about which I want to daily going forward.

Ooooo! Another idea hit me for you:
I’m not sure on the resale market on your watch, but you could turn it into 2 GREAT watches. A 16200 DJ (Sapphire crystal, smooth bezel and oyster bracelet from the early 90’s) is about 4.5k USD, and a 5 digit Sub is let’s say 7.5k. For $12,000 you have a HELL of a combo. This video turned me onto the 16200 - just such a clean dial. I love DJ 41s in any model # // keep the gift and get a sub later. The hunt and anticipation is a huge part of the watch journey anyway

I'd do what the wife says albeit with a twist. I'd tone it down with a nice leather strap.
