If I were a professional diver, I would use a Rolex. Submariner for shallow/recreational diving and a SD or SDDS for deep diving/saturation diving. The SD and SDDS really only come into their own at depths greater than 300m and since few people EVER go that deep, I think the Submariner can rightfully be tapped as the most desirable (King, if you will).
Since I am only a recreational diver, my back up is a Seiko SRPD777. Does all the same functions as my Rolex, but I can replace it for less than $400 if it leaks or gets lost...
i agree....i wear my sub everywhere...plus its insured in case i lose it in the water, damage it, and etc etc. i have a jetski, i desk dive, dumpter dive, water dive, mow dive, i sub goes everywhere with me...

that is why its numero uno....( number one )

It's not bad for an entry-level pro piece, but "king," of a "jungle"? Don't think so.

If sub is entry level, what is mid level and upper level?

Daytona is too fussy, 3rd party movement, bezel too delicate, dial too busy.

Sub is king.

Eh? It's not been a 3rd party movement since 2000.

(And as others have noted, the OP is talking about dive watches anyway)

Should be a caveat to how advanced you are into the culture as to how you view models because it does change over time.

Certainly the SS Sub is one of those watches everyone just getting into ROLEX wants to buy. It’s entry level in the fact that most every entry level buyers buys it or a DJ as their first Rolex. The SS Sub is literally everywhere and being so common has more advanced buyers looking for more unique options and there are a lot of them. Because it is so copied also makes the general “black bezel dive watch” even more pedestrian. This is why many of us were drawn to the LVC way before it was popular as it was viewed as just a odd green Submariner. If Rolex came out with a blue SS Sub most would loose their mind to get one.

More advanced buyers. Right. It probably means people who buy TT serti Submariners, that one with diamonds on the dial, then a 'bluesy', then maybe buy a "'Hulk" or "batman" or even a "batgirl", watches that everyone here seems to own. I get it.

Exactly. “More advance buyers.” LOL!

To me, that means the watch snobs on YouTube that try to convince me that a Glashutte SeaQ is a better diver than a Submariner. They’re nice, but no thanks. I’ll take my Submariner all day, any day.

Some people accumulate so much knowledge about watches, that they ultimately can’t see the forest through the trees.

I think the shear amount of homages and copies of the Sub solidify its status as “king”. That being said, historically, the Fifty Fathoms did come first. HOWEVER, further investigation will show that Squale designed and manufactured the original Fifty Fathoms case and provided cases for many other dive watch makers. So is Squale king?

Submariner is King!

It's laughable when some Youtubers say Blancpain Fifty Fathoms or Glashutte SeaQ are the premier divers. They're both great watches, no doubt, but let's be honest here. Neither one is King.

I'd rank Omega Seamaster 300mp #2.

There’s a reason it’s been so popular for so many years.

Unbelievable watch & not a passing fad like some models.

Yes, IMO the Rolex Sub is the king of mechanical dive watches. A king doesn’t need to be the strongest, oldest, smartest, or even costliest in the land, but he is the figurehead. The Sub is the image that most people think of when they think of dive watches.

Aside from the sub, which I think is the best overall looking watch, what about the Omega Heritage Seamaster 300 in terms of actual use? With the domed sapphire glass, the lumed bezel markers, and the Coaxial movement it seems like a pretty functional piece. Again, not anything like a dive computer of course, but it's half the price of buying a sub through a grey.

It sure looks nice on leather but Rolex hands down definitely has the best bracelets. Personally I would like to have both the 124060 and this one.

I dont know this…
Thank you !!!
A provocative and subjective question! Without operationally defining “king of the jungle,” then the answer is - in my opinion - yes. I’m guessing that the Sub is the most influential watch in the history of wristwatches.

The SS Sub is a very masculine looking watch, in a way that others in the Rolex lineup are not, at least not to my eye. No nonsense and without a lot of fanfare. Similar to myself ha ha !

It is, and love it, however the Tudor Pelagos IMO is beating it several aspects... mainly that of being true tool like older Subs/SDs used to be before they started getting a bit blingy.

The Pelagos beats the Submariner hands down in every way (except being shiny and saying Rolex). I had both at the same time, barely wore the Submariner.

Pelagos punches in the Sea Dweller weight class IMO.

Not just the king of the dive watches, king of all watches. It is what started the real hype in luxury watches and none more copied. Nothing is close. I have had more expensive watches, but none as iconic, durable, no-nonsense, and good looking. I can wear it with anything in every situation. We all have heard that you can wear it from the beach to the boardroom. So very true and can’t think of another one that this applies to as well as the submariner. It is understated, but those who know watches appreciate its hommage to the original. Really the only watch I need.

I agree that in the dive work the Rolex Sub line would be the "King" but in the overall Rolex line without a doubt the Dayton is the "King". And a very elusive and expensive "King" (LoL).

I live in the middle of London and have literally seen around 5-6 in my life on peoples wrists.

Online a lot more (obviously) so despite its popularity it’s not as common as you’d like to make out.

I’m in central London again today and as an avid ‘looker’ at wrists I’ll pretty much guarantee you I won’t see one today.

As for your commoners comment. If a commoner can afford to wear a piece of jewellery more expensive than some people’s cars then I’m happily a commoner

Depends on your definition of "king". Frankly I think it's the coolest watch ever made and I am still shocked to be wearing this extremely precise mechanical instrument on my wrist.

It is arguably the most influential watch in modern time. Further, it is a simple, easy-to-read watch, and it does exactly what it is designed to do very well...and I imagine not very many of them see saltwater use. All said, I consider it the perfect watch for every occasion, and I like how it's not insanely large and not an excessively high-profile watch, even though it is a Rolex with a ceramic bezel.

That said, there are a lot of really nice watches out there. Hell, in a way, I think we could also argue that some of the dive watches made by Seiko are "king" in their own respect.
