Is it ok to wear a watch better than my Boss?

My boss doesn't care about the watches I buy or wear as long as I cook her dinner in the evenings and wash her car at the weekend.

I think maybe we don't have the same corporate culture here as in the US, but I can't see my boss, or any previous boss, caring one bit about my watch.

A good boss/management should not worry/concern of the watch you wear, as long as it is appropriate. Same goes for the outfit you wear to the job/office.

I wear Rolex to work almost every working day, I'm the only one wearing Rolex at the moment. My boss wears a Breitling and his boss (CEO) doesn't wear a watch, at all.

Ok guys and gals that is a very delicate question. My boss wears a TT sub so I wear only SS while I am at work. During his bosses last visit I noticed the boss wearing a like black Casio because his boss was wearing similar type watch. But I know has a very nice TT Datejust. I was wearing my SS LV sub and I tried to keep it undercover. It's just a political thing.

I understand 100% and the reason for me personally why I can"t pull off an all yellow or all rose gold Rolex. I am self concious about it constantly and rather than flaunting it I find myself hiding it.

Most certainly it is a problem. No boss likes it when underlings have it better than them. Where I work alot of the guys are retired police officers with pensions that were boosted with lots of OT. The media in NY are always publicizing how much retired police officers pensions are. Between the Pension & another job most retired cops live very very well for retired civil service workers. My boss hates most of us because we make way more than he does just for waking up in the morning.

I wouldn't care what my employees would be wearing. I've had kids from the richest families in Finland working for me. Did it bother me? No, they did a great job. These 20 year olds could have bought my business with pocket change.

Good for them, and good for me as they did an awesome job.

Anyone who has managed people of any age or level of education will likely have the same experience I have...... a manager normally spends less than 20% of their time on continuous improvement projects, mentoring, keeping employees challenged etc and 80% babysitting children that need to be scolded or coddled as the case may be.

It's unfortunate but very often true. However if you are fortunate and are able to get the right people or if you are able to cultivate the right enviornment then you will be able to spend less tiime babysitting and more time focussed on getting and achieving results.

Both the Daytona and the bluesy are pretty noticeable even to people that don't know much about rolex. I have owned both of them, and each time I wore them to the office someone pointed them out over lunch. So I stopped wearing them.

I work in NYC and interact with some extremely wealthy and powerful guys and they don't wear exorbitant watches to work. So I stopped wearing my rolex. You dont need to wear a cheaper watch than your boss, but unless you are working in the fashion industry you should strive to wear something that flies under the radar. I found I can get away with an omega PO. You could also get away with Tag. But you need to be careful with any Rolex that has gold on it or even a SS Daytona. That's just my experience, and I prefer not to draw attention from others for my watch. I don't see anything good coming of that kind of attention at work.

In a large company in a large town I don't think of it as a problem. IMO in a small company in a small town it maybe trouble for you. Some don't understand the hobby and may think of you as a show off.

My boss wears a nice 1680 sub and I know he's noticed my 114060, but we've neither of us has acknowledged it. Very few people in my group wear watches period. I feel like if your boss wants to day "nice watch", etc., then that opens the door to talking about your passion and WIS-ness. Otherwise, I think it would be weird to being up your boss's watch in any context without their opening. I just wear what I like, confidently... And honestly I don't want to work for anyone who would be so insecure as to worry that their employee had on a nicer watch.

How long did it take you to get where you are in your profession? Common sense comes to mind. If your boss wears a casio etc he wont even notice your watch. If he wears a trophy watch he will notice your watch. You need to evaluate his outlook on these matters but remember you never really know anybody. Refer to my opening line.

It should not matter to him/her in theory. Because he/she is your boss, it is safe to assume there was opportunity to purchase a Rolex and it did not happen. He/she may like to keep all of his/her money under the mattress where it might remain until death. He/She may have other vices that do not include watches. In the 17 or so years I have owned a Rolex, I have only seen a sub on the wrist of one boss. He was a donkeys rear end and appeared quite shocked that I owned one the day he noticed it and said something. We never got along and when I left to finish my degree, there were no tears between us. I would venture on the side of caution and keep that Rolex tucked away under the cuff and be aware of your hand movements when in his/her presence. At least that way if it does get spotted by the boss, he/she will know you were not trying to announce it.
