Hi there,

I'm in a similar position to you, but I'm a little further ahead in the process. I'm 17 and I'll be 18 in 5 months, I've also had a part time job for a long-ass time and I've got quite a bit saved up. I held back, bought a £13 Casio which I've worn every day and loved. I finally have enough money to buy myself the watch I really wanted - a BLNR. I now have enough money to comfortably buy it and not have any financial worries heading into University.

Save up. I think of it like a ladder. At the bottom of the ladder you're at £0. At the top, it's whatever watch you want. For me, the BLNR. In your position, I was half way there. I had about £3000, and I was strongly considering a Speedmaster, because who doesn't want a Speedy?! But that puts me back down at the bottom of the ladder, and I have to climb the whole way back up to get to the watch I really want. That's how I like to see it.

Buy something cheap to tide you over, it'll be much sweeter when you finally get your hands on it.

Thanks for the info! Good luck on getting your BLNR! Post pics when you get the bueaty. I think your advice is great, I'm gonna save for the subc, and like you I bought a 350 dollar deep blue watch to hold me over and now they are selling for 550, so I can flip that when the time comes!
Good luck with your studies at your university!

I think you should get the Pelagos first, buy it used and do a lot of research to get the best price, maybe from a trusted seller here, and then keep saving and trade up to the subc, as I think 2 years is too long to wait for a budding WIS like you without a quality watch. As you are already planning a RO in future and no doubt a Patek after that I'm sure this will just be the start of you buying and trading to build up an impressive watch collection. Good luck.

Only you can decide.

If you will be living in the dorms, I'd vote against having a nice watch. I'd just focus on learning and having a GREAT time. College/university is a very special time enough and doesn't require a special watch. You seriously won't understand this until you do it yourself. Same as having kids (on a smaller scale).

Get the Rolex Sub, the sooner the better. I bought my 16610 new at an AD for $3650 back in 1999

How about borrowing parents some money to buy Rolex now, then paying off them Monthly installMents.

Pelagos

Great watch, great price, flies under radar and can take a beating. Like many here, I have owned many watches from cheap to expensive. I don't think I would have wanted to wear a rolex in college. Between sports, parties, etc, I would be scared to harm it or lose it. There were many times I woke up not sure what I did the day before and worrying about an expensive watch should, in my opinion, not come into play during that period of your life. There are used Pelagos for sale on the forum from trusted sellers that will be fairly new and much more affordable. Last thing......it's a darn cool watch!!

No 16 years old need a fancy watch like a Rolex or a Tudor for that matter, focus on experiences and growing as a person, not on luxury goods.

Now if you must, the important life rule is: always save up for the one thing/experience you really, really want. It is worth it in the long run.

All I can say is that I wish I was in such a position to afford a Rolex at 16. My grail back then was a Tissot.

In regards to your question, I would get the Pelagos at your age. Very cool watch and younger looking as well.

Save and get what you want.

Since you will get what you want anyway, don't lose money on a flip or wait even longer to save up again.

Trust me, I have been down that road many times

If you really want the Sub, keep saving for it. It will be worth it. Do not settle for anything less.

In the mean time, buy yourself a cheap Seiko diver to hold you over.

I would buy a pre owned 16610. A mint one would cost you approx. $5500 USD.

My greatest regret is not travelling the world before getting stuck into career.
Use your savings to fund a 12 month trip. No doubt you already have a watch, wear that.
You'll never get that amount if time off again. Well, not in the same environment, anyway, if you get my drift.....
Save the watches for later. I have no doubt you'll be able to afford them, and more, once you hit the workforce.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I don't think 6,500 could fund a 12 month trip. But luckily my family enjoys to travel which we do for about a month. We have been lucky enough to go to the majority of the Central America, European countries, North American prime spots and continue this summer with Africa which will be fun

It'll fund the part you don't have the cash for, and you don't really want mum there with you this time......

Anyways, if you're set on it, buy the Rolex.

You seem set on buying the watch, and you also seem totally fine having your experiences provided to you buy your family. Why not just ask your parents to get you the watch?

Er, yes it could very well,
take that $6500, get a working holiday visa for Australia or New Zealand. Work, earn more money doing easy work in rural places with other back packers. Then take that money you have earnt to travel to the next place and work some more and have plenty of fun in between.

Many people do AUS or NZL and then go into Asia. I dont like asia so I haven't been (except for work which is different)

See a new country on your own, look after your self, meet new people.
I did it and in 4 months in Australia I took home the same amount I arrived, with and enough to cover my airfare whilst also living and traveling whilst in Australia

yes, its a bit off topic, but it is more than possible

This is totally true. You should really not be worrying about something like a watch at this time of your life. When you're 30 years old, I promise you thinking back to that amazing around the world trip will fill you with more joy than thinking about that time you spent $6,500 on a watch that you didn't need.

Also, if you're talking about waiting two years to buy the Sub, it's not going to cost $6,500 BNIB then.
