Lol I have friends in south beach who pull down 6 firgures in the industry. They’ll make $10k in ONE WEEK during WMC. They’d rather shoot themselves they work any amount of ‘real jobs’ making even less than they do. I’d say they’re doing just fine. |

I'm glad I'm the 'ignorant' European who just rounds the number off and will most likely never set foot in that particular restaurant again

If servers gets substantial amounts in tips for going over and above their basic job requirements, props to them and I'll say well deserved.
If a server moans about not receiving a tip for doing the bare minimum and says he needs it to survive, well, tough luck go have a cry? Better yet some servers think they are entitled to twice the tip because you ordered a $100 steak and not the $50 one.

In Sweden for example we have rules about salary. The only way to get a bad salary is that it is based on commission sales and applies to sellers who can then influence their salary by doing a good sales job. Then we use to give waiter's and cab driver's a small tip but I guess these days when people pay with credit card they lost a lot of tips.

I did not mean that it is the employer's responsibility that the employees can pay their bills, then everyone would loan as much as they could.

Excellent, I'm glad for them and I'm sure they're earning it. I love to see people successful in exchange for their hard work. My issue is with their employers (or rather, the system that enables said employers), not the wait staff.

Yes, we get that. But what you are proposing doesn't help anyone, especially the wait staff. Most I know here were/are adamantly against Initiative 77.

Im against subsidizing employers. And its not like you can "get a better job" as that works in a micro sense but not in a macro sense. If everyone had college degrees, the least capable would still work at McDonalds. So an individual can move up, but everyone cant as its simply impossible.

Would you still tip when restaurants start to pay full minimum wage?
Quote:
Local governments research and arrive at what the ideal minimum wage should be in order for someone to meet basic needs in their respective cities; it is not decided using a random number generator. How are we qualified to assert that the min wage is not a living wage? Money is never going to be enough. Bonuses and pay increments will always be welcome and appreciated. Yes if everyone had college degrees the least capable would still work at McDonald's. But the reality is that not everyone will be able to get a college degree so there will be some people who work at McDonald's their entire life. And while that sucks for them, that's just too bad; the rest of the world does not owe it to them to be able to live comfortably. Yes it's unfair. Is it fair that you have 2 rolexes and I only have 1? No, but too bad for me. My point being employers are not on the hook for anything more than the legal minimum requirements. I would love to see the look on my manager's face if I had gone to her back then and demanded an increase because I couldn't survive on the wages I received. It actually was at McDonald's (no kidding) and yes they paid me min wage. If I had to hazard a guess, her response would probably be for me to clock extra hours.

Wow I always thought people were just super generous in the states tipping 20%, I never knew it was due to subsiding their salary. People are really happy in the UK when I tip 10%!

Does anyone else find it odd, that a lot of people on minimum wage (and welfare) seem to have the newest iPhones, luxury sunglasses/sneakers/accessories etc?..........or maybe that was just a Florida thing. I found it *quite* peculiar listening to people talk about how they 'can't afford to live', but seemed to upgrade phones every year and have things like LV purses. Kind of seemed more that they 'can't afford to live how I want to'.
I remember being poor as a kid and I had clothes from Goodwill and didn't know what I was eating that night, lol. |

Tipping's always been strange to me. I could order a $10 burger, and my wife could order a $40 filet mignon. Same (or more) work to make the burger, but the server would make 4x the tip for simply putting in the order and then walking the steak to my wife, vs. me my burger. All because of the underlying price of the item. What a weird way to assign value to a service.

When I was deployed to Iraq my enlisted soldiers slept 4 men to a trailer. Worked 16 hour days and worked 350 of 365 days. So if you want to say it’s apples and oranges because of the benefits then add them all up a divide by hours worked any you’ll see what a great deal they are really getting. Not to mention I think it takes a little more training to dress a sucking chest wound then wait a table; so in reality it should not even be close to begin with. The GI Bill you pay into so only those who pay into and go to a qualifying school get that. The Post 9/11 GI Bill is a different story but come with it’s own sacrifices. But unintentionally you do make a valid point. Wait staff have other options. They can enlist and live like kings. PS. I always tip especially when I’m working because the wait staff always takes great care of us and I like to return the favor. |

Yes.
Note: If the Service Sucks, Your Tip will reflect that. If the Food Sucks, It will be returned to the kitchen and your tip will not change.
