Rolex is not in the comic book or soft drink industry. I really dont understand why people have a hard time saying "Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT Master 2 with black and blue insert" every time they reference the watch...

Do we need a sticky that lists all of the nicknames? I’ll go play with my Rollies while anyone who’s read this far mulls it over....

I prefer when people use the reference number and typically that is what I do. I have never liked the nicknames but have come to accept that a lot of people use them. I left another Forum and came to TRF because they were, in general, just to uptight about things like this.

I guess it's just a WIS thing, you have to admit Polar seems to fit well.

I can't always tell which watch is which strictly from the reference number, why can't we just refer to them as what they are, DateJust, GMT, Sky Dweller, Submariner, etc. Leave the silly nicknames to the little kids.

The problem is when you ask an AD if they have a 116710BLNR, and they reply “which watch do you want?” And you repeat the ref. The say “what’s the name of the watch?”. This goes back an forth for a while till the AD rep sale, “oh you want a Batman!?” Lol.
Then they say, oh we don’t have that. How about a gold day-date!? |

The worst nickname ever for the BLNR is the "Bruiser," which you don't hear that often, but was the name of choice by the staff at my AD.
On the whole though, I don't think that I can get too worked-up over the most cringe-worthy names. The most important thing is communication. No term is adequate if no one knows what is being spoken of. Whatever facilitates communication is okay by me.

I have to admit I cringed when my AD sales person referred to the BLNR as the Batman ... like Tyler, I was just a bit taken aback and thought it seemed a bit unprofessional. I didn’t leave tho, still bought the watch |

LOL, I do not use the nicknames, but they do not bother me much. Some folks like to use them, some folks do not know the reference numbers nor is there a requirement to.
This is a hobby, it is supposed to be fun!

The names are kind of dumb yeah, but they make it easier to refer to which watch you are talking about. Better then saying "I have a ref # 114060909405u039092LV"

Wow, pretty wound up here on this old chestnut again...
I say let people call these watches whatever they want. If an AD uses a nickname to make sure that I or any other customer researching on the internet knows that they are talking about the same watch, it is fine with me. I do not have to "test" the staff on their knowledge of model numbers, just because I'm on a watch forum daily and am aware of the variations. As long as they provide good service, with respect, and a deal if possible, I'm good. |

Nicknames make the watch more instantly recognizable. When I hear Batman I know exactly what your talking about. Do i know it's the 116710BLNR? ya...but it doesn't have that instant reaction like the nickname. People on here forget Rolex SS models are at the low end of luxury watch making and put them on a pedestal... It's a watch...

Those are nicknames for the models nothing more. Don't forget nicknames are given as a sign of affection or even to ridicule. I do like the nicknames. It makes it fun.
BTW; you forgot SMURF & HULK

It seems like the nicknames bother folks in London more than other parts of the world. This is my observation by checking the location of the person complaining about such items. I deal with folks in London on a daily basis and the attitude there is generally what I would consider more stuffy/proper depending upon your point of view.
To the person who walks out on someone mid sentence due to the use of a nickname......wow......very rude. Remembering number and letter sequences for a specific brand is really low on the important aspects of life. |

I think a British person is more likely to apologise themselves to the AD for them having made a faux pas
