Why would the brands wait an entire year. They all have better ways to release their new models than continuing to use a much criticized and outdated show like baselworld anyway.

Exactly unless they are having a show in January and April!

I don’t disagree - but if Rolex and PP announce all their new stuff as scheduled (April/May) then what is the point of showing up at Baselworld in January - why not just pull out and plan for April 2021.

Agreed. Weird how they just didn’t announce it was cancelled this year and will be back for April/May 2021

BASELWORLD Postponement

So I’ve just seen the news and the article on Hodinkee that Baselworld 2020 has been postponed.

It appears that the event will not be held until January 2021 effectively cancelling the 2020 show as far as I see it.

The Swiss authorities have banned all large scale public and private events until mid March with extension likely in the light of the current coronavirus outbreaks.

This raises so many questions.

Will Rolex release new models still around the time of the original planned dates of Baselworld? Will this release be purely online or at a different Rolex only event held elsewhere? Could Rolex delay new models until 2021? Also as Baselworld is now effectively cancelled this year will this herald a new era where Baselworld is no longer the same media forum for Rolex releases?

Finally how might this effect the SS availability over the coming months?! It’s going to be an interesting time to see what direction Rolex decide to take this. Huge news given that Basel went ahead during WW2 and has never at any stage in it’s history been cancelled.

Interested to hear your thoughts!

Rolex like any other manufacturer will have a production schedule that is planned n=months in advance, based on projected demand including new product launches.

My feeling is they will still announce new products online and other media and roll them out in the scheduled time frame irrespective of Bazelworld.

I also think Rolex will channel stock to markets with strong demand and that may mean a short term uptick in availability due to stock going to markets that have been getting limited stock previously,.

Interestingly I got the Call a few weeks ago for a Two Tone SeaDweller after a relatively short wait here in Australia.

Cycling's Tour of the UAE has been cancelled following participants testing positive for the virus.

Trade shows as mentioned have been postponed in Switzerland, the Japanese are contemplating the potential postponement of the Olympics, there is also a question mark against the UEFA European football championships this summer.

Venice's famous festival was closed early, ski resorts in northern Italy are closing early, the border between Italy, Switzerland and Austria is being closing monitored, and I believe that at least one train was refused access to Austria from Italy.

The virus would appear to be spreading fairly quickly so it is likely that there will be further disruption to our lives including the possibility of factories across the world having to close to stop the spread of the virus.

Not sure if the Swiss watchmaking elves will be affected by Covid-19 but I suspect that they could and as a result we may see shutdowns of the factories, so getting hold of a Rolex may well become even more difficult than it already is.
And we are only 40 or so days into covid19, give it a few more months????

Damn! This means I’ll have to wait another WHOLE year for my SD43 Hulk. I’d better get a hefty discount on MSRP..

Joking aside, absolutely the right thing to do to cancel the event under the circumstances.
I'm currently in Istanbul....have been for the last month. All the hotels have been filling up with asians at an astonishing rate because they can't get back into their native homelands because of the virus.
I dont hold much hope this place will fair any better and soon may be on some form of restricted lock down before long. Tehran is off he menu flight wise as are many middle eastern destinations as those nations are closing down to try and get a handle on it spreading.

Interesting times for sure but I'd still like to know how what the mortality rate is for this virus compared to the regular strains of flu we've had with for decades.
The virus has an R-0 of anywhere from 1.4 to 6. They are still trying to nail that down. For cases outside China there's a current mortality rate of 14 per 1000. Read more here: https://www.popsci.com/story/health/...seases-spread/

For anyone thinking this is overblown, the jury is still out. I think what we're seeing now is pretty serious. Even though the virility is less than SARS or MERS this looks more serious. The disruption to the world's economy will be felt for quite awhile and the recovery will depend on how quickly we can develop the meds. Stock market this week tells the story. More to come....

Makes no sense to call it postponement. That's next year Basel, simply 2021 Basel. Its not like they'll have another Basel in mid next yr in a gap for 3 months.

I'm hoping that Rolex will still address the proportion problems with their supercase subs this year.

After the manufacturers release their 2020 watches on their own, I suppose they will all realize they don’t need Basel world anymore, except maybe as an industry gathering.

In a world where the top tier brands dont need the shows - it makes it really tough to justify these shows for the smaller brands as well.

BW is more of a journalistic watch event for manufacturers to showcase their new watches. No one does it better than journalists I guess, in terms of generating buzz. But I do agree this is just a watch event and Switzerland has her rights to minimise viral outbreak in her country.

Kiss the Olympic Games goodbye too ....
Gone all together or at the very least, no spectators.

Those who think Covid-19 is blown out of proportion ...... I hope you’re right, but I suspect you’re wrong.

Would be very surprised if Rolex were to delay their new lineup.

Implementation of ideas/technology/design costs money and I doubt Rolex is going to miss out on profits because of a postponed stupid trades-show.

Time for Rolex to withdraw from this event and this is a good way to get that started.
