I’ve always favored the no date versions, and I think the 124060 is the ultimate evolution of the Sub.

For me it’s the 16610, gifted to me in 1998 and on my wrist more days than not over that span. I love the look of vintage, but it has the same lines as the vintage versions, perhaps arguably the most robust movement Rolex ever made, the upgraded steel in the bracelet, and walks the line between vintage and modern.

The ultimate Submariner for me would be a nice good clean condition 16610 from 2000-2006, before any of the rehaut engraving or ceramic bezels. This is the type of tool watch that embodies traditional Rolex for me. If I could have only 1 Rolex, that would be it.

So, I'm lucky to own several Subs. For me, the 1680 stands out and is just so enjoyable to wear. The fit, comfort, look, and accuracy are amazing. The overall visual statement continues to impress decades after its release.

Hi OP, great question but a tad subjective.
From the early subs I prefer the 5513 Maxi dial (I have one) From the mid production subs I prefer the 16610 SEL non rehaut (I have one) From the modern variants I prefer the latest 41 due to its harmonious proportions (i will get one) I believe Rolex lost the plot with the maxi case era of adding more metal to the slab side case. Just my 2 cents

Short of a true no date vintage model, the ultimate sub really is the Sea Dweller 16600.

126610lv. The new 41 series is king IMO. With a splash of color and still steel which is more functional (which doesn't necessarily matter) but gold is a bit contradictory on a Sub.
Vintage is on a different level and is brilliant on the wrist. However, the quality of any vintage piece is sub par, compared to modern. Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Tapatalk |

The 6538 is my favorite vintage Sub, while the much divisive 116610LN is my modern favorite.
I own the 116610LN and I'll never forget the first pics I saw online. I didn't pay a lot of attention to model updates then because I never thought I could get one. I compared it with the previous 5 digit and noticed the Maxi dial and super case lugs immediately. I thought those features really gave the watch a personality against a market flooded with 5 digit look alikes. The new generation is still close but I would never give up the distinct thick lug look of mine. As a consolation prize to never being able to touch a 6538, I have the BB58. I'm more than happy with that piece as well. |

There are so many possible answers to this question, so I am going to answer like this.
Affordable: The one I own. (16610) The money no object answer: The one Sean Connery wore in Doctor No. PDG |
