I checked into a hotel last year and had the feeling the person at the front desk was paying too much attention to my watch...Didn't think much about it, checked in and then went out..

Forgot something and as I headed back, the front desk person was literally coming out of my room!!

I was so stunned and they were moving so fast, I didn't even react.

I did speak to management about it but no idea what that even was.

Sorry to hear about your loss...Glad it's insured!

Sorry. Total BS. Total violation.

Someone should setup a sting with a small Wi-Fi camera and nail the thief.

Man so sorry to hear this. I usually keep at least one Rolex with me on the hotel safe. Next month I’m traveling for work and will be in a mid level hotel for an entire month, rural area. I was going to take a watch but I cannot possibly wear it everywhere. I plan to workout everyday and possibly play tennis multiple times a week. Your story makes me want to travel without a watch.

This is crazy, I’m sorry this happened however I give you a lot of credit for being calm and dealing w this very maturely. Based on your posts I get the sense you never really lost your composure… congrats. Given that the cameras record outside shouldn’t it have shown the maid enter and a second person enter as well given her story. Good luck w getting reimbursed.

Sounds like someone knew what they were looking for. Here's an idea: Have hotel security go back through camera footage of the lobby/hallway to see who was around and watching when you came in the other day with the bag from the jeweler. How else would someone suspect that 1) you had a nice watch and 2) chances were high that there was a second nice watch in the room?

Unless you did something else to make yourself seem conspicuous, it's too much of a coincidence, particularly if you're the only one on the floor who was robbed at the time.

Sorry to hear Danny, hope insurance helps to replace it. Any cameras on the hallway of the hotel room? That may at least show who entered the room after you left to pickup gas etc

Drove 700km to pick up my Black SkyD.
Stayed in a fancy hotel ,took the family with ,made a long weekend of it .
Kept the box and watch in the safe ,the whole time .
Picked up Otitis externa and food poisoning over the weekend,so I was a dead security guard for the Rolex in the room.

Trip to remember .

Hotel safe .

It’s moments like this that make you question the hobby and if karma is trying to yeah you a lesson for having an ego. I’ve had a very similar situation happen to me because I was acquiring a watch.

Makes absolutely no sense.

Every one is not getting this. Why would they clean the room before you check out? She cleans at 10:00. Say you came back and take a quick nap and shower and check out at 1:00. Then they have to come back and re clean the room??? Makes no sense.

This whole episode makes me think about carrying a portable RING video camera when staying in a hotel now…

Yeah, sounds very sketchy. There is no other reasonable explanation other than a hotel employee stole your watch. I’m very sorry this happened to you. You seem like a classy guy who’s had lots of good fortune in life. Thank you for posting the story just to remind us about the risks.

Based upon my previous post and the events, the maid or her accomplices stole your watch. She had no reason, instructions nor authorization to be in a departing guests room prior to checkout. Your room would have been excluded from her first shift cleaning manifest. Rooms excluded from this first shift list are either empty rooms or the guest is leaving. Cleaning staff have an official lunch break after shift 1. At the end of said break they receive a new cleaning manifest for shift two. This list is generated from checkout data derived from the reception system. Cleaners don’t just clean where they wish, instead they receive explicit instructions for each shift.

Once again, so sorry for your misfortune. Maybe try your insurance company, sometimes you do have a period where newly purchased items are automatically covered.

Sorry you had this happen - I see you’ve got the right people involved. Of course, let RUSA put it on the theft list. I’ve recovered 2 of the 4 taken in a home burglary - so there’s hope.

As many may know, Hilton will give a franchise to anyone who can fog a mirror, pass the financial report review and pony up the fee. If it is the housekeeper, then likely this isn’t her first rodeo.

Danny, so sorry this happened and forgive me if this was asked already but what are the chances the maid gets arrested?

Good luck to you and hope you have a Merry Christmas anyway!!

Many years ago I consulted a very well known hotel group, and served a variety of properties including some of their flagship properties in LA, NY, Chicago and Santa Barbara.

I recall a member of the client staff remarking that all the Directors of Operations from various properties would meet annually at a flagship property for an internal meeting, and all would stay on the same floor. And, all would hang a "do not disturb" sign on their doors throughout the duration of their stay to avoid hotel staff rummaging through their personal belongings.

I was surprised at the time, but will say that I always do the same now, if I have valuables with me and there's no safe in the room. Frankly, I even do it sometimes if there is a safe in the room as not all safes are created equal.

Anyway, sorry for your loss OP. Thankfully it's "just" a watch. There will be others!

Sorry to hear. I usually travel with two watches and have generally felt that my hotel room
is pretty safe. My rationale is that the last thing a hotel wants is to have the police come to investigate a theft. I think the hotel will reimburse you regardless of what becomes of the case, they too have insurance.
Interestingly though, I traveled to New York last month and at the last minute decided to just take my Daytona and wear it all the time. Wasn't shopping for another watch but not sure what I would have done had I made a spontaneous purchase.

Sorry Danny. That really sucks my Brother! I know you are always safe and the fact is there are people out there who are not to be trusted.

I hope that things work out for the best and you get compensated for the watch. I'll definitely be more careful when traveling with watches and jewelry.

Obvious inside job since the thieves knew the cameras inside would not record anything, that young cleaning lady doesn't need her job huh? what she needs is to spend her Christmas in a jail cell to teach her some manners and make her come clean on the heist.
