A couple of new smilies installed:

1. For all the cool equipment

2. For all the hot guitarists

By the way, if you really want to see and hear a Strat sing, check out the new David Gilmour DVD from his Gdansk performance, which was recorded this year, just before the sad death of Rick Wright. David still has the goods and his solos are first rate.

I dunno, when I really don't like Gilmour that much (overdone pentatonics to me). For me the strat is all about SRV, Robert Cray, Eric Johnson, and believe it or not John Mayer. I just think the uniqueness of the single coil sound should have some hum and cycling, and Gilmour uses those Seymour Duncans which kinda cancel all that stuff out. Just sounds too clean for distortion for me.

I'm assuming you are referring to "Wish you were here", which uses that signature, but we will have to disagree on that one, I see nothing overdone about it at all. The Floyd stuff is as original today as it was nearly 40 years ago, in my view, and while I am a huge fan of Clapton, I think Gilmour gets more original sounds out of that black 1971 Strat than Clapton does. I see your point on the SD's, however, I don't think Gilmour's overriding theme is distortion. At the end of the day, however, I am a bigger fan of the Les Paul, ala Jimmy Page. Good comments, by the way.

Exactly Nigel! Wish you were here was exactly what I was thinking! No doubt he is a great guitarist because, well if he wasn't he wouldn't be David Gilmour, just not my style. I too like the LP but go a little more towards the Peter Green nasally sound (as you probably can see from my previous post, I have modified my LP to resemble Peter Greens '59). But Jimmy Page is also a great LP tone, as well as believe it or not Dave Aldridge from Whitesnake IMHO.

I've been a pro-musician for at least 38 years and am embarrassed to say how many guitars and amps I own. But I started on a Gibson EB-3 bass, them went to a Les Paul (my first pro-guitar) and now play a Stratocaster - but I own all of them - and some pretty cool ones at that after collecting for that long! Great pics in this thread! That guitar in my avatar is a '60 George Gobel (very rarebird). I just checked the poll results and it was exactly as I thought!!!

Ok... I'm sure you've seen beaters before but this is the ultimate-beater. Been frankened and thrashed for years. I wonder if there's any place who is into restoration? Needs faceplates, knobs, covering repair, and just about everything else. Sorry for the hijack and assault to the senses...

Continuing the hijack... (sorry) I've done a bit of research and have narrowed this beast down some. I appears to be a JMP Super Lead made somewhere between 1969-1973. I need to confirm the circuit board as being wired point2point but I'm awfully sure it is (had it open but long ago). It is most probably a 'metal panel' version, based on the now riveted aluminum face plate on the back. The front panel is just missing. Now I guess I'll have to remove the chassis and check out the boards. While I'm at it, I think I'll repair the various 'flappers' and piping on the case. Time for a re-tube and bias as well. If nothing else, this thread has inspired me to treat this tired and neglected old friend to some TLC...

Back to guitars...

Sorry guys, I can't vote on the geeetars as I don't play. If only you were asking about Hohner vs Lee Osker!!!!!!!!!

What I do know is my bloos and that everytime I see Robert Cray play live, he switches Fender's all night and the sound is awesome. As was Clapton when I saw him.

However, Lucille is a Gibson and BB makes her cry and sing like nobody else can. I believe Keef also plays a Gibson.

Can I call it as a draw?

On the amp front, I play harp through a green bullet fed into a Hog 20 practice amp.

I did shell out for a Fender Pro Junior and switched out the tubes for 12AX7 valves for that fat, dark sound of Little Walter. Unfortunately it was so loud (surprisingly so!) for my lil' semidetached three bedroom house that I had to sell it on and replace it with the weeny Pignose!!!!

One day, I'll pick up a vintage Champ....One day....

Boy, this poll is neck and neck... but a LP neck, of course, is better than a Strat neck...

For me, it's got to be a Tele. This is an example of the sound - just me and a vocalist jamming. I really like it.

Although I am a Gibson Les Paul fan, I believe every guitar player should have at least one (or two, or three) Strats. I passed on a couple of fantastic deals and I’m regretting that now. The next time I find a good deal on a Strat, I will grab it right away without hesitation.

There are posts on this thread about MIM and MIA Strats. A friend once asked me this question: Which ones are better, Strats made by Mexicans in Mexico or Strats made by Mexicans in Corona, CA?

I am currently “Stratless” and here’s what I have:

The pedal is a Boss ME-50 "multi-effect" and I love it. My Marshall does not have Reverb and I can add that (or echo), plus Noise Suppresor, Tremelo, Overdrive, Distortion, WAH, etc, with the BOSS ME-50. I mostly use the Marshall "raw" and just add the delay and a MXR 10-band equalizer in the FX loop. You'll be surprised what an equalizer in the FX loop can do to the sound.

I have owned both. It depends on what kind of music you are playing, what you are playing it through and what you are trying to accomplish.

I play rock, southern blues, 1970's ZZ Top stuff......etc. I can't get what I need out of any Fender / amp combination that I have tried. I wish I could because I love those guitars.

Put a Gibson Les Paul Standard or even a Deluxe on a Marshall Valve-state stereo amp; run that though a good sound board and I can gut you 75 yards. Add a BK Butler Tube Driver pedal (hard to get anymore) and some other nice accouterments and all is perfect in my world.

A good example of this would be Billy Gibbon's solo on La Grange, especially the riffs he does at the end of the song. Or the one he does My Head's in Mississippi.

Long live the Reverend!

By the way, I have seen Gibbons utilize a Fender or Gretsch on occasion, but not for long.

I hate that African hat.
