Thing is, it's totally different to the 5205R in every way. I can't trade in this 5205R as the Daytona is not a replacement, definitely a case of having both of them. I love my PP in any case and want to hold on to it, this platinum Daytona will be a wonderful watch to complement it in my little collection.

I will be hunting for the right deal and making sure timing is right for my personal finances to get an extra watch rather than a PX deal, but expect an incoming thread in the not too distant future.

Thanks for all the advice with this one, having tried it for myself today the way owners speak about it makes so much sense, definitely a true 'keeper'.
I'd be shocked if you were disappointed.

Better yet, swap the 5205 for a 5990 and you will have the best of both worlds.

I realised again these past days the 5205R-010 is a very special watch to me, I don't know quite what it is about the watch, a combination of things I suppose, but I have no doubt it's one I will keep a very long time and I'm really happy to have it! So won't be PX/swapping it, coming close to doing so made me realise I definitely couldn't go through with it.

In any case the platinum Daytona is the watch for me, I've looked at all the Nautilus models but prefer the platona for a number of reasons.

Here's the way I looked at it when making a similar choice.

The Patek is a beautiful watch but it's 'just' an annual calendar. In that sense it's a 'compromise' watch and will always be 2nd banana to a perpetual calendar.

On the other hand, the Platona is the top of the tree for what it is. A Daytona-- in platinum. A no compromises watch.

For these reasons I chose the Platona.

PS. On the wrist there is no other watch like it.

I guess, but I don't really consider any Rolex professional models to be the "top of the tree." It's simply a matter of usage and which complications one needs. Add to that my bafflement of wanting a Rolex professional model in a precious metal, and that makes a haute horology Patek more appealing to me for that kind of money.

There are some REALLY special Rolex sport models in precious metal that very serious collectors drool over (c.f. Concord GMT, 1680/8, 6263, 6238 and so on), so I wouldn't write them off. Patek has its place, and I have a few, but this particular A/C compared to the Platona... It's Platona in my book. It's such a one of a kind piece, the movement finishing is really secondary.

(The Daytona movement, btw, is quite special, albeit available in the steel model at a much lower cost.

I'm not a big fan of this particular PP, but buying a precious metal Rolex professional series watch is about as interesting to me as buying a gold plated Range Rover, and I wouldn't give up a piece of haute horology over such a thing. Heck, I'd take a steel Zenith Daytona over the Platona.

If I was the OP, I'd probably flip the PP for a different model. Or just keep it and buy a steel Daytona.

The 5205R is a special watch to OP and so he should keep it until he finds something that can replace it.

Most people have a story about a watch, whether it was one's first Rolex or Patek or the purchase of the watch commemorated a special occasion. It is part of the hobby. Many people flip a watch to go back and re-purchase the watch a second, third or fourth time. It is better to keep your original, rather than to buy it back over and over.

I agree that it is better to add the Platona to the 5205R. They both are different enough that they can be worn in different situations.

Platona at least 30% off from trusted sellers. Take a look and contact a few.

Go for the Big Boy Pants watch

if you like an annual calendar and a chronograph then sell what you have and buy a Patek 5270G or R or Lange Datograph Perpetual in pt. That would solve the itch at once and you'd know you were getting the best of the very best.

Well. The Patek is in another league of horological mastery. It features gorgeous complications and is so different then a Daytona.

The Platona is more versatile without a doubt. And much much less delicate. A tank by comparison with nothing to worry about as an every single day watch. The patek you need to be aware of it and the service?? Forget about it...

But my head scratcher is the money factor. Are you taking a huge hair cut on the patek? If not, then do it as it seems you want and need the Rolex better suited to your lifestyle.

Myself not a fan of any of the Patek range yes fine movements but just don't like there style of watches and myself don't wear a brand. Not a huge fan of the modern day either Daytona and even less of a fan of any precious metal watches.

I would never have replaced my 5205 with my Platona. They are polar opposites in my opinion.

I love to look at Patek but I feel the same way, you have now owned one so full steam ahead on the Platona!

Give up. It's hopeless. You know that you will end up keeping the Patek and buying the Platona anyway. Keep them both for awhile, then if you end up liking one much more than the other, sell the one that no longer appeals to you. It's the rational way to approach doing something as irrational as buying a watch that costs more than a Porsche :)

I am in a similar situation - I had this sudden hunger for the Platona, but I would have to sell off an AP RO 15202 plus a BLNR to do it (+$$$). I decided that is too much carnage, so I'll just have to wait until I can add it to the stable without making any sacrifices.

I don't mind pm watches but having sport models in pm is not my cup of tea.
A platinum Daytona is pretty much the extreme imo. I can admire it (the dial is superb) but price wise it doesn't make any sense to me. It's a Daytona at the end of the day.

Keep your Patek. I'll probably sell a couple of Rolex watches to get a Patek at some point. This is how it goes, trading up not down.

One vote for the Platona here! It's such a stunning watch. I could stare all day at that glacier dial. Otoh Patek is Patek. I wish I had your dilemma! Forget about the prestige of either watch. Go with what you like best and what you will enjoy the most. They are obviously very different watches. One is one of the most beautiful sports Rolex ever made and the other is a knockout dress watch by the crème de la crème of haute horlogerie.

LOL!! Yes the Sonnerie is utterly outrageous, and I would buy one in a heartbeat if I was Bill Gates! I think pretty much any modern watch will be fixable, and FPJ has allegedly made plans for the brand to continue after his demise.

I think you and I are not so different in our tastes, and your own watches are exquisite and impossible to criticise. I also love the Laurent Ferriers.

Cheers man, and apologies for the thread derail to all Rolex fans out there (including myself).
