I don’t understand the hype of Peter Lugers. Your in NYC, there’s many high quality steakhouses. My favorite is Benjamins. 52east 41st. Nice dining experience. They accept cash or plastic. Remember the holiday season is here, so reservations are challenging. Enjoy NYC

No way would I pay $50 for a seat for an over priced meal. I would rather go get a piece of pizza or two. Somehow I would feel used or conned.

Well, next time you are in Brooklyn and decide on pizza instead of greasing the host $50, just to head over to DiFara, the world's greatest pizza!

I understand what you’re saying here Art. I feel the same way about some things. However, I’d never let $50 stand in my way of doing something I really wanted to do, whatever that might be. One of these days I’ll make the trip across the Brooklyn Bridge, slip the maitre d a $50 and decide for myself about the Luger hype.
To each their own.

I thought Lugers was good but not great and a little tired and I’ve been twice recently. I prefer COTE but to each their own.

$114 for a T-bone steak for two? Nah. Creamed spinach as the main side? Nah. Cold bread and rolls? Nah. This place sounds like you are strictly paying for the name recognition and the fact it has been around forever. Oh, and USDA prime steaks that are butchered on site. I would not go out of the way to try this, even if we were vacationing in Manhattan.

At 2:00am this weekend me and the guys I was with were all starving. Haven't seen that late (or early) in years.

We went to the Chinese restaurant and the wait was over an hour. We checked out the food court...

We went back to the Chinese joint and I gave the host a $100 chip I was holding. We were sitting in less than 5 minutes. The meal was exceptional and the experience was well worth it. We had a blast.

Money can't buy a good attitude, but it can certainly buy a good time.

Worthless is the point of view that anyone whose opinion differs from yours is motivated by sour grapes or couldn't get a reservation. I mean even La Freida has pointed out shortcomings at Lugers.

The PL steak that you are missing out on is better than any other steak you will ever put in your mouth. But you will never know.

Although well intentioned, I think New Yorkers, native ones, not been here for 5 years kinda ones, should make bold statements of what’s best.

I hear you on DiFara (although I may not agree, but who am I) yet nobody is just walking in and walking out without a frustrating wait.

Pete Wells was right: Peter Lugers sucks and it's a scam. Nothing more than a tourist trap well past it's prime.

There are many better choices in NYC. Enjoy your time there and safe travels!

Not really, and not exactly directed at you. Sorry you got caught in the quote.

There are just a lot of strong opinions in this thread on NY food and as I look through members locations, there are too many opinions as fact coming from those non NY natives or once in a whilers.

Yes you do have to live here, for a long time, to know what’s good versus what’s said to be good.

See what I mean, not New Yorkers...

Exploradori, from Bethesda MD? Seriously dude? You know NYC steaks? It’s a scam? You go and they don’t serve you steak? Certain tourists they trap and throw back.

Seattle - you prefer COTE Korean BBQ? Great comparison.

NYC - I hear you no cc sucks. But does your favorite pizza joint accept cc?

North Carolina - Brooklyn is in the city

Atlanta - DiFara is a tremendous wait and not steak.

New York is and has the best of every cuisine from around the world...

Benjamins, STK, Wolfgangs, Delfriscos, Ruth Chris, Nusret,Sparks...being eastern european i have friends and family that work in all the big ones.... We all agree Peter Lugers is the best in New York, followed by Wolfgangs next. Flame on tourists

My best piece of advice: don’t sleep on the extra thick cut bacon appetizer. IMHO it’s the one thing that Luger’s does better than the others. It might end up being the highlight of your meal. Tried Lugers for the first time this summer (I’m from Chicago). You are spot on. My buddies have hyped it up so much over the years, it had no chance of living up to it. Bacon was the star. Porterhouse was meh. My wife and I didn’t even finish it.

I’m the OP, that means I started this thread.
Seemed like a good idea at the time, now maybe not so much.
Are you suggesting that since I’m from Western NY that somehow I shouldn’t have an opinion? Let alone a vote?
I go to a different steak joint each time I visit NY. I really enjoyed Quality Meats food. That means nothing more than of the 8 or so steak places I’ve been to, I liked Quality Meats steak. But it was a real close decision as there are so many great places in NYC.
Wolfgang’s was excellent the other night too.
Didn’t mean to offend you.

Btw, it’s Tournedos, not Tornaedos. And it’s a pretty good place, for Upstate.

Yes, I’m saying since you’re from western New York (just like my wife , born, raised and even schooled in your town) you two don’t get a vote.

Apple spell checked me. And it’s not pretty good.

All in good fun and a smile on my face. I’m a food snob. I eat at the craziest dirtiest places throughout the city. Let me take you on a food tour of Jackson Heights.
