Am I missing something? Daytona.

Hi lads,
Been thinking about this for a few months. There are a few Rolex styles that i'm not massively mad on but I just don't get the whole Daytona thing. Every now and then I'll see a pic of a white face on s/s and think 'Not bad', couplea actors had them back in the day. That's as far as it goes. I'm not a fan of the three button, three dial look. Over busy and reminds me of Mickey Mouse from some angles. What am I missing? Is it all hype and people jumping on a bandwagon? Can't be, help me out, is this just eye of the beholder? Fair play to those who like em and have em.

Agreed!

I very much like the toolwatch-style vintages ones in steel, but that's about it. I am not interested in the glamour associated with many of the rest of them.

I don’t get it either. I’ll take a Speedmaster over a Daytona any day of the week.

Totally agree. I was in Vegas recently and the Rolex AD in the Bellagio had a demo (TT) Daytona that I tried on for the first time. Very underwhelming. Too small, hard to read, bracelet overwhelmed the case, and the screw down pushers were cumbersome and distracting. My first reaction was "this is the piece behind all the hype, I don't get it!"

Comparing the to my 3861 Speedmaster, the Daytona is not in the same league, by any measure. I popped over to Omega and the very nice Omega associate, Mandy, gave me a private viewing of the Ed White. Wow, next one on my list! Perfection. I would not pick a Daytona over a Speedmaster, at any price.

If you are playing the flip game or all you want is hype on your wrist I get the motivation for a Daytona, but as a functional and aesthetic piece, I do not. To each his own, and if you love the Daytona, right on, but I don't see it.

I love my Rolex collection, but there is no room (at any price) for a Daytona.

I have both and while the speedie is more legible due to larger size I would not take it over a new Daytona. Just my opinion.

Do a quick search, this topic has been discussed in detail hundreds of times in this forum.

Daytona is not all hype, it has been around for a long time. Green watches and watches named after comic book characters, that is another story.

Enjoy!

Daytona is one of the most iconic watches ever made, along with the Submariner.

I don't get the point of this thread, if you don't like the watch, don't buy it.

This.Stupid thread, sounds like sour grapes because people can’t afford or can’t get the watch.

That's your opinion. In my eyes it's ugly and way too much going on the dial and I don't care for chronograph. Way over hyped and way over priced. You could give me one and I wouldn't wear it, just flip it for a couple nice Rolex watches..JMHO..

Anyone from time to time needs to ease himself for not being able to get a Daytona. And as that is a must for anyone who is into watches, it is not easy to have it overcome. Don’t pay attention to it, it needs treatment, and there is only one cure for it! Get a Daytona!

Henry Ford once said about his model T, “you can have any color you want as long as it’s black”!

Everything isn’t for everyone and frankly if you don’t get Daytona, it’s you not the watch…

I agree with you there which is why I can’t be too upset or impatient waiting for the green dial one. My watch is over 20 years old now and it was and is still a grail piece for me!

Your photography of yours is amazing also.

It was pictured on the cover of a watch magazine in 2000 and I frankly lost my mind over it.

Redundant thread. Benefit of doubt, search is sometimes difficult to use.

The 116518LN “Paul Newman” (though I disagree with the name) is my only grail. When possible, I will own one.

SS, I would pass on from AD. Just not a fan. Regardless, I wouldn’t start a thread on it, I would just not buy it .

Never been a fan of the modern day Daytona yes it has a great movement in the top 5 of any chronograph movement ever produced. But today hype sells Rolex watches, the more the hype and seem harder to get, the more its wanted to wear the hype by many.

Peter, you really need some new material. PM me I'll forward it, to my screen writer friends......

This repeated one, kind of begs me to ask, why don't you care for the new references as they are simply "improved" over their predecessors....?

I mean the WG Daytona Steel dialed 116509-0072 is a super close resemblance of the late 60's piece. To the ignorant, it might be mistaken for an older model....

I do spend time on a race track so that's my connection to the Daytona.

I'm aware of your Daytona inheritance from your father and how lucky you are to have it. But why "insult" us newer enthusiast with your repeated distaste....

If I had a dollar for every time I've read "buy the hype to wear the hype" or "86,400 seconds in a day" or "££££$$$$$€€€€" I could buy a 6263!

Not insulted anyone, and I am entitled to my opinion, and will state again not a fan of any of the modern Daytona, whether SS or any other metal.

You avoided my question. Never insinuated you were not “entitled”. I asked WHY….

And it’s a bit insulting to me, as I’m rather new to this hobby and striving for knowledge! Which you hold.

Regurgitated posts of distaste on a watch forum?

Again, what is it you don’t care for????

Afraid knowledge is far down the list of priorities on forum now, as its mainly investment this or that, or all down ££$$.Yes I have quite a lot of knowledge about the brand, simply because I wanted to learn as much as I could about the history of the RWC. But sadly today thats mainly long gone, the Daytona has a great movement, and Rolex first ever in-house made chronograph. And like I stated I would put in the top five chronograph movements ever made to date, but still not a fan and would not buy one to own at any price.

The unbalanced sub dial designs

The way the 6 is inverted on the 9 o'clock dial

The unclear / over - fussy design

The stupid garish colour schemes

The overly polished case

It's just not a nice watch to look at. Vintage models with the Zenith movement weren't great, but were at least better.
