What do you guys think of the future price development for the OQ...I think it will be one of the models that will see a great increase, shadowing the AP RO that has seen quite the price development the last years...the down side is the problems to fix a broken movement and the hefty service cost...what’s your thoughts?

I would not fear service costs. Worst case a motor module will add $600 to a $700 service. Unfortunately you are tied to Rolex for service as they will not sell parts for these. I know you will read differently here but mine spent 7 months at the only alternative for motor repair with no luck. I will not name names as even without a successful repair the service was impeccable and at no cost. I honestly believe the 17000 in particular will appreciate. I mentioned that in a thread on investment watches and received the comment “$3000.00 an investment?” Which I laughed off with a buy 10 response. Point being we are not all rich and 3k turning in to 5k is not a bad thing. Attached is my beloved mk1 beater and the last watch I will sell. It is often a conversation starter
and just plain cool to wear. Buy one while you can,l guarantee you will love it whether it appreciates or not.

Yes I believe they still do service dials, although not all will be available.

I love the OQ, it's the watch that started my Rolex addiction!

Have probably owned around 30 OQs over the last 5 years, but here are my 3 keepers.

17014 with Slate Diamond Dial
17000 with Blue Dial
17000 with Black Dial (NOS)

So, the OysterQuartz movement was the same 5035/5055 throughout the life of the watch or did Rolex continue to "better" the movement. I understand they had a new, "Super Quartz" created in the early 2000s, however one made prototypes and scrubbed the quartz all to gather.

Does anyone know if this is a redial, I havent seen this combination before and do not believe its been in any catalogues ??

If so how do people spot re-dials ? Usually the text looks a little thinner or not as crisp. Looking at this one, the text is a little thin but not overly so.

https://www.chrono24.com/rolex/datej...id15402049.htm

There was this one on C24 awhile back that had a "non-catalogue" dial, and was sold as a full-set w/ box & papers. Were these options available as a special order ?

This is a truly stunning watch. The price realized at auction was 81250 CHF aka
$88,838.11 USD. The Keystone is trying to flip this same watch for $155,000. Anybody who is deep enough into OQ collecting that they are seriously interested in this watch would surely do a little research and learn this was the hammer price. This is just laughable greed IMO.

That said, I would LOVE to own this watch.

How many OQs were made?

Fellow OQ lovers - I have been trying to research how many Oyster Quartz watches were made. It seems that Bob's Watches reckon 25,000 from 1977 to 2001 ish. Whereas WatchTime magazine have 105,097 over the same period (the entire run). I declare my interest, as I have a late day date 19018 from 1999, and would like to establish how many of each series 5035 and 5055 were produced - just interested. Anyone know for sure?

To be fair, I initially thought it was double markup, but the strike price doesn’t include auction fees which are 25%, or shipping/customs which might be expensive because of its high value.

Actually, "Price realized" includes the buyer's premium. Even if you want to go crazy with shipping costs, let's call that $500. I did a search to determine the import duties and/or any taxes that might be payable. It appears from the auction listing that when it was sold, the watch was still with the original family (ie: in Saudi). I am not sure what you'd pay in that case, but import duties in the USA are some of the lowest in the world (typically around 3%).

The final cost would be nowhere near the current asking price. This is a niche watch, and I wish them luck getting that price.

Hi OQ experts - have a question of MK1 watches. Do 77/78 watches have a 17000 caseback or a 17000b caseback and does it matter? I see from other posts that 77/78 should normally come with 17000 bracelet i know that. Thanks!
