seems like Grand Seiko marketing on forum is working out.

now is how to let the pedestrians know about the existence of Grand Seiko
Lol at which point has Seiko marketed on our forums? Grand Seiko does market when international watch magazines write about their watches. Grand Seikos are not Seikos. Mercades and BMW are running out A classes and 1 series. These are "cheap" luxury cars you still consider them luxury cars. Guess its possible to have a brand with a wide range possibly? Tag Heuer has a few hundred dollar watches to tens of thousands of dollar solid gold ones. Grand Seiko range is promoted, they know the average pleb wont shell out for their Grand Seiko because of the perception of their brand. So they chose the harder route, marketing only to those they know and want their watches.

Actually i additionally mentioned autoquartz used by Omega the movement of which was based on the Seiko kinetic movement. People were prepared to pay thousands for it as opposed to hundreds for the same movement simply because of the brand or maybe the workmanship of the case and the design for it. I like purely mechanical watches as well, though i think it is really great that the Kinetic actually has the best of both quartz and mechanical movements combining the accuracy and quartz with the lack of need of replacing of batteries of an automatic. I just couldn't stick with it. The ticking second hand just put me off. I just love the sweeping of the second hand of mechanical watches.

Precisely, and that stereotype is hard to overcome

I mean I think we can all see that I'm not GS's biggest fan (<< understatement of the day) but I don't doubt they are very well made and probably worth the price, but the 'pedestrians' will have a hard hard time with the name at that price point, as will a lot of people who love watches as we have seen on this thread with 'I would never buy a seiko over a rolex however good it is' type comments

I bought my first Grand Seiko long before I bought my first Rolex! But I like to have watches that I don't see on other people.

Definitely! Just to be clarify for the thread though, a Kinetic is very different than a spring drive. Spring drives literally don't tick at all, and move completely smoothly across the dial.

IMHO, the Grand Seiko line up looks more refined and pleasing to the eye than the current Rolex collection. There are some nice looking watches in the Seiko collection like the SBHG020, but there isn't a single current model Rolex that I would buy.

I will leave it to others to read through your posts over the course of this thread and read what you've written and decide for themselves, along with the definition of the word "heritage" and the broader meaning of asserting the heritage of their fine automatic movements, which they've been building since the '50's (and putting mechanical movements into watches for far, far longer than that), is in their quartz movements, which the began building in the '70's (and which at that time were not "cheap", but rather priced at $1250 (around $8,000 in today's dollars)).

Helpful hint: trying to massage what you wrote earlier by subterfuge and obfuscation will fool no one; this is a pretty smart crowd.

And, with that, into the "ignore" file you go.

No offence but if you cant find anything you like in the current line up, I think your watch pallet needs cleansing. Either that or your taste in watches is nothing to go by.

Why? Everyone is entitled to an opinion and taste is subjective. There is nothing in current line up I would want either and I think my taste is quite good. Oh and yes I have a few Rolex in my collection so I am what one might call a Rolex collector or what you might call someone who needs a good watch pallet cleansing.

Not even one? Seriously?

No need to get personal about it... No offence was intended.
I just find it hard to believe.

No need to get personal about it? I am sorry I thought you said the poster above needed his watch pallet cleansed and his taste wasn't anything to go by??

Then you use the WTF emoticon with me?? Hmmmm seems to me you are only one getting personal. As for current Rolex line up yes not even one I would want....Sorry. Don't find it hard to believe as we are all entitled our own taste and as I said it is subjective. I also prefer an Audi R8 to an Aston Martin by the way.

Now let's all allow others the right to their opinions and play nice!

The debate will never end. At the end if the day one is a seiko and one is a rolex.

Thankfully, not everyone chooses a car based on numbers alone. I don't care which is faster, on UK roads is a moot point anyway and ALL of the above will be more than suitable. You choose what brings a smile to your face and for me, it was the Mercedes SL. If more cars of this calibre offered a hard top, I might start looking elsewhere.

I didn't buy it to thrash around and show off how fast I can go. I bought it because nothing beats the feeling of an open top convertible that has the comfort and performance of a closed coupe in the fast lane... oh, and it's a Mercedes

Mind you... a convertible with UK weather is probably also a moot point

Dan, is that a pic of your Daytona in your Avatar?

I have have or have owned over ten Rolex's over the years, and currently own watches from Seiko, Omega and Jaeger-leCoultre. I simply don't like the current Rolex line up........not even one! Fat hands, fat lugs, ceramic bezels, exotic stones and exotic metal on sports watches, or polished centre links just don't do it for me. We're all different and I'm not complaining, I have my old models, and there is no shortage of other watches being made that I like.

There are some Rolex models that I like, however I wouldn't buy them because they are too small for my wrist.

Personally...and just my 2 cents...1. Two different watches on so many levels and 2. I wouldn't spend the money on a Grand Seiko. I own some Vintage Seiko Automatics & S-Waves...but never would I sink thousands into a Seiko..never.

The SBGA001 "Snowflake" Grand Seiko is THE GS to own if you want a non-GMT Dress Watch. Discounted you can probably get it in the $6K range.

I would positively love to own this reference.

It's a Spring Drive that positively stops the wearer dead in his tracks when he glances at the dial.

I saw this very watch at Henne in Pittsburgh not too long ago. Nice people there, the whole Shadyside section is awesome too. They had some nice pre-owned Rolexes on display but away from the new stock.

Good luck, that is one heckuva watch if you can swing it.

Same here Ken nothing in the Rolex line up over the past 20 odd years have excited me.Well I did get a bit of a buzz when they made there first chronograph movement ever in 2000, but just did not like the style of the Daytona they put it in.But apart from a few mainly cosmetic W/R changes most of the movements models etc have changed very little since introduction of the 3 series movements in 1988/9.
