I did until I got my 14000M "vintage" Air King. The smaller case size, silver dial, simple applied batons much more suit being a dress watch.

I wear what the hell I want. I didn't buy this watch for opinions and some outdated social norm. If all the sudden Brad Pitt wears his Deepsea with a tux at the oscars everyone on social media will think it's cool.
Is it a crime, that seems to be the opinion of some, some weird status social norm violated. Are there a whole bunch of uptight old men smoking pipes in the room, with their fancy hats(oops not indoors), a cane in three piece suits with all the buttons buttoned...whatever, I'm trailblazing through life creating my own happiness because that life is in fact too short. I work in an environment that's like the United Nations and when people see a Rolex they do not think tool watch. To the general population a black Submariner in a suit looks right a home, and no one will say anything about a guy wearing his Suunto in suit(oh God forbid right). I feel so much pity for the first world problem people that live under such constraints in their life, worried about useless outdated things. Lastly, the history of Rolex in itself is about breaking with tradition, one of the reasons I love Rolex. Hans went against the grain introducing the wrist watch against all the uppity social class who used pocket watches. With that in mind I'll happily stomp around in my Rolex diver with a tux going against the grain, a toast to you Hans. |

I wonder if there is a parallel thread somewhere asking if you wear your Cellini dress watch to go diving?

Yes of course I do as if I didn't I would have no need to ever own a Rolex as I would only be wearing them on weekends...Don't think so. Wear what you want to wear and ignore the watch elitists.

I have owned a 6 digit sub. And previously owned 4 and 5 digit subs. And have worn a sub with a suit for work and non work thousands of times.
It's just a watch. A great one, yes. But still just a watch. Now, whether or not I would wear (or could pull off wearing) a bow tie, is an entirely different question.

Sure, you can wear a Sub as a dress watch just like one can wear a top hat at the beach, as I often do. If the occasion requires a tie, mine are hand-made string ties made from baling twine because un-dyed, woven jute is the new silk, according to me.
I also have dress sweatpants and casual spats. Sometimes I wear them together and if this showcases my super-unique desire to "be who I am" and express the radical notion that I will indeed give the finger to stifling societal norms I imagine all others are adhering to, then so be it. If I run an errand to the store for groceries, you can be sure I won't leave home without first donning a cape and grabbing a riding crop or walking stick. Why?...because I like them. If it's awesome and cool to signal one's special independence via apparel and accoutrements that others notice, it's purely accidental. I don't plan to do it since I just wear what i like (of course!..doing otherwise would be weak and get you immediately kicked out of fake movie-spy school), but it explains why in a tux/formal wear occasion wearing my favorite cobra skin cowboy boots with spiked spurs...a sort of "tool footwear" version of the "tool watch/Sub-with-Nato strap" thing but with the added facet of noticeable, jingle-jangly auditory rebellion whilst I saunter amongst the fashion drones...I get occasional looks from people (sheeple) who obviously just don't get what it means to be liberated. The beta-males may tut-tut or snicker, but on the inside they're jealous of (and incapable of carrying-off) Alpha-male expressions of inner freedom that coincidently manifest themselves as clothes and jewelry decisions, and women get weak-kneed at the devil-may-care confidence required for such daring. Sometimes they even swoon. If you don't believe me there are actual advertisements and movies aplenty out there to prove this is what happens. Aplenty. |

Damn!!!! Some people around here are getting a little to excited and hostile. This is a watch forum, not life and death decisions. Whenever this topic rears it's ugly head and it does too frequently, I wish the OP would have done a search before and saved all the juvenile chest thumping and juvenile accusations!!!! When push comes to shove, there are no laws about what watch one chooses to wear. I choose not to wear flip flops and shorts to Church, but that's just me. I won't drive a lifted pick up truck to a wedding either, regardless if it cost &50,000 or not ( see the watch comparison here??)
. You can probably see what camp I'm in. No matter how hard some try, there are still some people that subscribe to a civilized way of living, and god forbid we do think that society has some decorum and propriety left. So to all that think there are "no rules, do whatever you want," have a nice day, I can't and won't try to change your mind, just don't insult me and try to change mine either. PS, I'm not just talking about silly watches, but things in general. |

For me, I'll wear my SubC with anything (casual, super casual, sport coat with jeans, suit with no tie) other than a tie. It has to be a really formal event for me to wear a tie (suit or tux) so then I use my great grandpa's pocket watch that I conceal. This is just me, but I don't like to portray that I'm trying to upstage the situation or have something more pressing that I need to be looking at my watch in those situations.

I thinks subs are pretty versatile. Weather formal or just with jeans and a t shirt...they work.

Do you wear SUBs, as a dress watch?
What I find amusing is (i) how upset people get about this either way and (ii) the weird belief that there is actually a rule about not wearing a sports watch with a suit, which there clearly isn’t.
Maybe it’s a regional style thing, but everywhere I’ve lived most men (or at least half(?)) wear ports watches with suits. Heck, in Italy wearing a Sub with a suit is so common that it’s to the point of being cliche. So no, while one may not like a diver with a suit (some days I don’t), it’s not breaking some sort of social norm (like wearing sneakers with a suit) to do so, at least where I’ve lived and worked. Seriously, is this a regional style thing? Because I’m genuinely perplexed that some people think it’s akin to the fall of all decency and politeness in dress. |

Not sure if it's regional or not. That's just the way I was brought up. I get why other guys wear them with ties, but I don't. Some guys really seem to be offended or passionate one way or the other but that's their issue. There are things I'm passionate about but none of them have anything to do with what another guy wears or doesn't wear. I use my great grandpa's pocket watch for special occasions because it's a really cool watch with great history, I can conceal it in my pocket, and I think there's something to be said to my earlier comment.....but again that's just me.

IMO, seeing a dive watch with a suit is like seeing a suit with sneakers. But, to each their own.

Do you wear SUBs, as a dress watch?
Quote:
Yeah, when I was a kid I don’t think the subject of wearing a watch came up one way or another, except that I thought Connery’s Sub in Goldfinger was the epitome of cool. My step dad had one watch and pretty much never wore a suit. I grew up working class, so it wasn’t until I came to NYC to work that I started to pay attention to how one should dress. Oddly enough my first watch was intentionally not a sporty kind of watch because it seemed like that’s what everyone was wearing and I wanted something more retro and different. Then after damaging my dressier watches because I’m a klutz, I started wearing divers and went to the other extreme— bulky and colorful (like a Sinn U1). Perception is a weird thing— to me a 5 digit Sub is a really cool, classy and timeless look (even on a NATO!), but I do understand that others don’t see it that way. |

I think it's at least partially an age thing.
But also taste.. for example... I am very conservative for my meetings... suits must be dark with small or no pattern.. white shirt no pattern or color... and a small pattern bright tie... anything less and I fell like I am wearing pajamas in my meetings... yet I love wearing my Sub or DSSD with the suit. |

A dive watch worn with a suit is it's own cliche' everywhere..for a very long time. Nothing original or "modern" about it, for instance, frat boys have done it for decades. It's sort of like reaching middle age and deciding to build a "man cave" in your own basement or attic with neon beer signs on the wall and telling everyone (who couldn't care less) you have a "man cave", as if it's a sign of virility.
