Any cheap watch out there can very well survive this Rolex Deep Sea 12KM Challenge because James Cameron will be wearing the watch inside the safety and comfort pressure zone of his state of the art SUBMERSIBLE vessel. It is therefore misleading to advertise it this way.

Unless of course, James Cameron ties the watch outside his submersible then that is another story. But then again, that would be silly not to be able to wear it during deep sea diving.

Well if he wanted to wear it, he could wear a Patek Calatrava inside that capsule, and then they could advertise that their dress watches are capable of being worn on 12,000M dives.

As amazing an engineering feat this is, the Sinn UX still impresses me more. I'm a firm believer in working smart, not hard, and filling the damn thing with silicone and not bothering about making it particularly pressure resistant was a pretty brilliant idea for whoever thought of it.

I would be curious to see if they tied a regular DSSD to the outside and see how far past it's rating it would go before folding....

Really?

The intent is that the watch will be on the OUTSIDE of the vessel.

It would be biggest waste of time, and no one is that foolish, to think the watch is needed for INSIDE the vessel.

The point is that they can develop a wath to withstand the harshest environment on earth. It's superfluous to use inside the submersible.

Well... technically superfluous would be having it outside where it couldn't be read, the Calatrava in the cabin is prudent ;)

World record for deepest dive on SCUBA at 1,083 feet/330 meters. No human has survived past that depth without a pressure suit... To make a watch that if used to its potential would be suicide, seems pointless to me...

Guys, go and browse www.deepseachallenge.com. The submarine will be manned by one person, Cameron, while the watch will be tied outside the submarine on one of the booms. The watch tied to the boom can be seen in a video of a test run. Looks like the actual dive might happen this weekend, weather permitting.

Correct. The point isn't to create a watch in any "useful" sense of the word. It's to push the boundries of design and engineering.

Somewhat pointless, I suppose, from a practicality standpoint. But inevitably, technology from this stellar watch will surely make it's way back to the standard line of watches...which will improve things for everyone. That's how R&D works.

So why shouldn't this fall under the dumbest idea/invention of the century list?

If it's a watch that is supposed to be worn, but yet can not be worn under 12KM in the ocean because it is not physically possible to do so and survive.

Reminds of the failed inventions documentary show on history channel wherein the US military developed a short-range cannon-type portable nuclear rocket that can be carried and fired by a single soldier. Yes, they were able to successfully make one but then they figured out that the blast range and radiation fall-out would also kill the soldier who fires the rocket. Seems like a suicide mission everytime you use the new device. So they scrapped it.

Well, for the sake of what ifs, I would still give credit to Rolex for this mission.

I have a suggestion to ROLEX on how to advertise this watch and sell it to the market.

"New Deep sea Rolex watch 12KM waterproof! You ride in a cruise ship, cruise ship sinks 12KM under the sea, ship captain bails out, you're dead but your new Rolex Deepsea survives to tell the tale!" (and your family can still keep the watch after salvage!) Good investment!

UPDATE:

James Cameron May Dive Mariana Trench This Weekend!! Weather Permitting. The Sub has already been to deepest point and back, unmanned and unscathed. Earlier this week retired U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh said via email, “The sub, its team and the mother ship are all ready to go, and we only wait for the ‘weather gods’ to favor us.” –> http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...t-science-sub/

I won't belabor the point here. Many companies often create things of little intrinsic, marketable value. This is called RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT. The point of such endeavors is to learn something new, create new tools and processes, and make forward progress in an area.

Every single successful company in the world does things like this. Although they might productize the outcome, they will most certainly use what they learned in future product development.

No one in their right mind thinks this is a practical watch. But that's not the point. We will likely see some "improvement" to the rest of the Rolex line as a result of this.

Just like your example. I 100% guarantee that SOMETHING came out of that development that made it's way into a very real, useable product. It surely wasn't a waste.

Make sense?

Heck, maybe domed crystals will start shown up again. That would be with it for me!

Testing theory measured by pressure test equipment to testing that theory to actual scenerio. Love it! The point isn't for a person to be wearing it. The purpose is to prove that the watch can survive and work properly under real conditions.

I normally would agree, but Rolex being waterproof hasn't been an issue for 5 decades... & not one thing has been done to modify/improve the movement inside... Just seems like the only thing accomplished is some childish bragging right, & the creation of one preposterous looking watch that cannot be used to a fraction of its potential...

Just put James Cameron's face on the dial and there you have it ....

For such a historic event, Is this all they could come up with: that
UGLY crystal protruding out like a tumor???

& what has the ringlock turned into? An Etch-A-Sketch???

They made quite a few improvements to their movements over the past 5 decades.

Either way...I want that domed sapphire crystal on my next Rolex. Albeit not quite so HUGE!

51.4mm watch diameter
28.5mm watch thickness
14.3mm crystal thickness

Basically...it's FREAKING GIGANTIC and totally RIDICULOUS!

But...it's also pretty AMAZING!
