Thanks! I've always been a fan of the early slab basses. The blonde bass I've had for over 30 years and the body dates to Nov 7 51 [first week of production of the Fender electric bass] and the neck dates to 11-55.

The silver semi hollow [body custom made by a friend] is a build I did in 1991 and the black was built in 1996.

Yeah I had a real good experience working with Bill on that one on the left, OM2H. I had some specific requests/wishes, and after a long telephone conversation he asked if I'd drive over and spend some time with him. He had his own design ideas he wanted to work on, and I was the patient custom customer he was looking for. It was late in 95, and he finally got what we wanted in early 97 after a couple of not quites. Good guy, great to work with, and followed through with a few requests to spend some time with it years later to monitor the change in tonal balance. It it a great guitar, I still marvel at it all these years later. RIP, Bill.

Well, it's both actually. Last year to celebrate 3 decades as my main bass, I had it refinished [since it had been refinished 2 other times] to look exactly as I found it back in 1989.

I found the neckless body at an old music store in Cincy. It was covered in gray crinkle paint. The only original part was the control plate. Wasn't sure what it was but knew it was old. With the help of Fender historians, I was able to find out an amazing amount of info. Turns out it was made by Eddie Miller [standing next to Leo Fender], future Country Music Songwriter Hall of Fame inductee [he wrote "Please Release Me"], as an employee at Fender's wood shop. Took it home and applied paint remover, only to find a beautifully checked blonde finish. But a previous owner had added their own forearm and belly contours. Paint seeped into the bare wood so decided to have it repainted in a 2 color sunburst.

Lucky for me, I found the [baseball bat sized] neck & pickup cover the same year in Louisville. It maintains it's original finish. The bridge plate, with serial # 0678 dates to 1955, like the neck. My dad made the bridge saddles.

This bass has been played at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago to Beale Street in Memphis. Not sure how many of the over 3K gigs this bass was used, but it was the majority, has served me well, and continues to be my # 1 to this day. I'm very honored to own and play this classic for over 30 years.

Nice! What a beauty!

I had a '58 in my early days with a gorgeous neck. Once I went slab I traded it for a '52 P. But it was a joy to own while I had it.

Dan, could you plase advise whether you use the finger rest when playing on your beauties or they are just for aesthetic purposes?
I could not get used to have it on my AVRI’57 and have taken out from.
