Speeding Cameras,Points And Insurance

Just paid a Speeding conviction for going 37 miles an hour at 4:50 am on Saturday morning when everyone was tucked up in bed so obviously I am the biggest lunatic dangerous driver in the world. maybe I'll change my name to Schumacher.
Anyway paid the £60 fine got the penalty points, and the T-shirt

Now my insurance renewal is up, came though £365. phoned up to accept, thought I'd better tell them about the speeding fine. OK she said I'll just add that on, next thing my renewal is £405. B@ST@RDS B@ST@RDS B@STARDS!!
Not only did I not deserve to get done in the first place, but now my insurance company is jumping in on the bandwagon, HEY HEY, WE'LL HAVE A BIT OF THAT. what a bunch of money grabbing b@st@rds.

Did I have a crash last year .... NO

How many years No claims have I got....12

so why just because some toy camera went flash flash, do they think they can bloody charge me more

now I'll add it all up

£60 fine plus 5(years) x £40 = £260 !!!

£260 for a going 7 miles an hour over the limit at 4:50am on a Saturday morning

B@ST@RDS

compltetely agree with your sentiments.. i was pulled over by a policeman for driving at 78mph on the M60 and accused of speeding like a boy racer! (motorway speeding limit is 70 mph for those who do not live in UK). I THINK THAT PEOPLE NEED TO GET THEIR PRIORITIES RIGHT, instead of seeing law abiding citizens as cash cows to finance our civil services.

I agree with you guys. We have a camera on one of our local streets in the Disctrict of Columbia where the speed limit is 25 mph. They hit you if you are going 35 mph in that zone. It's a 4 lane road and the limit should be at least 35. They get everyone coming into the District from Maryland, but don't hit you if you are leaving the District to go into Maryland. Talk about money grubbing B@ST@RDS.

Sorry to hear about your plight, Padi.

Happened to me, but fortunately just once. Was caught on camera doing 61 kph in a 50 kph zone. Received a NZ$80 fine in the mail.

Yes agree with you chaps now in my location on a short journey of around
40 miles to Cardiff, with all the speed cameras. You could easily clock up 12
penalty points, enough to loose your licence for 12 months.

The good thing about the NZ system, is that you get penalty (or demerit points as we call them) only if you are pulled up by a traffic officer for an offense.

If you're caught on speed camera, then it's just a fine - no demerit points. If, however, you are caught doing 50 kph over the stipulated speed limit, your goose is well and truly cooked. Straight to court with a possible licence suspension of at least 6 months and a thousand dollar fine!!

Ticketing speeders (not boy racers but people just a tick or two over more or less) is just a tax grab, plain and simple. Although police deny it, I know for a fact from a previous job that police DO have quotas they have to make each month for handing out tickets. That's why around here there are lots of radar traps set up toward the end of the month.

With what we pay to buy/service a car, federal income tax, provincial income tax, goods and service tax, provincial sales tax, municipal property tax, gasoline tax... you'd think the police would do their job and hunt down criminals, rather than pulling over honest taxpayers who are just a few over.

Some of you may recall a couple years ago when I was enroute to the birth of my daughter (because of SARS and full hospitals, wife was in a hospital 250km away for 2 weeks before little C came along), and I got nailed for speeding. Granted I was doing over double our speedlimit for most of the way, but given the high-risk of the pregnancy and the time of day (2:30 a.m.) on a straight, flat highway... it was justifiable.

However, the prick punk cop didn't believe me (couldn't have been more than 21 years old... still had a zit face) and not only gave me a huge fine and enough demerit points to make my next moving violation my last for a couple of years... but he delayed me for an inappropriate amount of time and I missed the birth of Charlotte (effing bastard!).

There is a certain amount of latititude cops can use and they rarely use it because they deal with the undesirables of society so often that when they pull over a law-abiding person, we get the same treatment.

Thankfully, I managed to keep my record clean for the two years and am now again demerit points free. BTW, my insurance company didn't boost my premium at all. In fact, it went down this year.

God help us if they bring back photo-cash grab... I mean radar.

A very quick picture taken by my son, never seen a double trap before
I can understand these camera in accident black spots. But my
son cannot recollect any accident on this road in the last 10 years.
But what they have done quite recently, is changed the speed from
40 mph to 30mph because of some road works just out of the picture.
My son said they had been there for over 5 hours, wonder how many
they had.
