FS: Rare 1959 Rolex ref. 6605 TT Datejust on Jubilee w/ cal. 1066 Movement

Up for sale is this seldom seen 1950s reference 6605 bi-metal Datejust with 14k YG semi-coin edge bezel & crown and SS case & back. This watch dates from 1959 and features a cal. 1066 movement, the last iteration of 10xx movements and the same caliber found in the later ref. 6542 GMTs. This rare reference Datejust features its original USA TT Jubilee bracelet and a striking Champagne dial that I believe to be a very high quality redial. Overall, this Datejust is in Very Good used condition.

The price for this classic 1950s Rolex DJ is $1950 USD by Paypal ($1900 by Paypal eCheck or Bank Wire), including fully insured shipping worldwide. Payment must be made in US DOLLARS. Watch will ship upon full clearance of the funds, as well as any necessary bank vetting.

CASE: To my eyes, this case may have only been polished once. Note the position of the lugholes in relation to the tips of the lugs and the thickness of the lugs in general. The mirror sides are dulled by numerous superficial scratches, with only one or two very minor nicks, and the satin tops of the lugs show only minor wear. With plenty of a metal to work with if a polish is desired, the case is solidly Very Good overall. The model # 6605 & case SN of 458,k are also perfectly legible.

CASEBACK: The rounded outer caseback has some superficial scratches dulling the finish and one or two small nicks, Very Good cosmetic condition overall. The inner case back shows no corrosion and bears the stampings “6605” & “II59,” the latter perfectly matching the case SN in terms of era of production.

DIAL & HANDS: The elegant slim arrowhead/bar marker Pie-Pan dial is bright gold/Champagne in color and has a satin sunburst finish. I have examined this dial in extremely close fashion and believe it to be an excellent quality redial: IMO, the fonts and "T SWISS T" do not fit the era and the minute ticks slightly overlap the edge of the Pie-Pan near “12.” Could be I’m wrong and it’s merely a later replacement dial but I’m not comfortable vouching for this being factory printing, so I am selling it as professionally restored (and very well done, I might add). That said, the dial is Near Mint, with an extremely vibrant gold color, lovely satin finish and bright gold applied markers, coronet and date window frame. The hands are the attractive gold Rolex Dauphine type and they may have had their lume stabilized with a non-luminous filler of some sort; it seems too clean and light-colored to be 50-year-old lume to me. The elegant handset is also Near Mint. Overall, a very attractive and classic-looking presentation to be sure.

CROWN: The signed gold Rolex Twinlock crown screws down properly and pulls out to the winding and time-setting positions easily.

CRYSTAL: The very tall acrylic Cyclops crystal may well be original 1950s issue and is chip & crack free and Very Good, with evidence of some older scratches having been polished out.

BEZEL: The 14k gold bezel has what is referred to as a “semi-coin edge” pattern, which immediately preceded the modern style of “Fluted” bezel and has a more tightly serrated pattern. It is in Very Good condition with only one or two small marks and a uniform mild smoothing to the serrations.

MOVEMENT: This 6605 features a cal. 1066 movement with classic butterfly rotor, the last version of cal. 10xx movements before the switch to the next generation of cal. 15xx. These 10xx movements are the same series found in other very valuable Vintage Rolex such as the 6542 GMT-Master and 6538 Submariner. While my first choice would never be cannibalizing a fine old watch like this one, these Dress models are often snatched up for the value of the hard-to-find parts in their movements as a sort of safety inventory for some of the more valuable Rolex collectibles. Though I do not know this watch’s service history and so cannot guarantee that it will not need a service in future, it is running well and keeping decent time with a good power reserve.

BRACELET/BAND: This DJ comes on what I assume to be its original Two-Tone USA-made JB Champion oval link Jubilee. This bracelet is well worn with considerable stretch and showing wear and some dents to the endpieces and buckle--Fair to Good original condition.

As stated above, I do not know if this watch was serviced recently and I make NO guarantees for the water resistance of this watch at all as it has not been pressure tested.

This classic Rolex DJ is offered with a 3-day inspection period from the date of receipt and may be returned for a full refund (less any shipping costs incurred by the buyer). This refund is unconditional and once I get back the watch in exactly the same condition as it was sent to you, your money will be refunded. Of course, once the 3 days are over the sale will be considered FINAL.

Thanks for looking,
T.
