I've seen these before.

It takes a good angle to make them look this dramatic though. Still, quite cool.

I've seen one go for £2800 so this one is a tad pricey.

Thank you Paul for the info ,
Were they made like that or is it one of those " faulty " things that become collectors like the "Patrizzi dial" with the paint turning brown ?

Hmmmm. I actually had a 18K/SS Sub come in a few weeks ago with a black dial and at an angle it looked like a woodgrain finish. I was leary and didn't buy the Rolex even though it had box & papers. It was an "A" serial number.

Note: Didn't buy it as the guy wanted retail for the watch.

Certainly a flaw during the manufacturing process or type of material used causing it to crack or "spider" as several other subs/gmt dials are prone to.

That is certainly a paint defect also known as crazing. i like weathered black dials - but not on something glossy and new like that. i would be shocked if it commanded a premium. harry

I disagree Harry, go out and find more than a fist full I mean it, there are not very many of these dials out there and if there are not many ppl talk about them. I also, have a as you call it crazing I call it crackle but, it's the spider web effect on the dial of my 5513. I had a picture of it and now fail to find it grrrr I'll not get it replaced anytime soon ;-)

I was bidding on a GMT "fat lady" with that spider dial effect a couple years ago.
I stopped at around $3k - forgot what it finally when for.

I think it's a really cool effect

hi earl,
the way i look at those, there is a defect in the paint or the maybe the glossy clear. i agree it is interesting, but i would expect it to degrade over time and impact the movement. forgive me, i am in the art business, and i see this all teh time with oil paintings taht were in dry environments, or when the canvas was unstable. anyway, my point is that i like original dials even when dammaged. i would find it very amusing if this brings a premium. harry

Yes, a flaw, but seemingly now collectable.....

great effect. i reply here since i just saw a submariner with no date like this in person. it looked a bit old as there was rust on the hands and the dial was a tad faded with a busted cyclops.

any idea what this may fetch now a days? and idea on the year rolex accidentally put these out?
