hi y'all.

I am looking for a rolex 'president' 18k band. I am looking for ways to identify a genuine Rolex authorized band. Is there any signs when taking the bands apart that I should look at?

any help would be awesome.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM

This is a loaded question.

There are reference numbers on the clasp and endlinks that will give you an approximate year of production. Also the Rolex markings.

If you need help, pop a picture here and we can help you out!

Not an easy question. They have changed over the years and many high quality Italian bands have been stamped with Rolex markings. The sure way is buy one from Rolex for about $10,000.00. If they will sell you one.

The markings are different on the folding clasp and the hidden clasp and then again different on the latest band.

You might want to do some self help.
Go look at ebay for all the 18K Gold and study the pictures carefully. Note the details of the corners of the bands, numbers and alphabets.
And study the watches for sale here in TRF as well.
It will help too if you buy the book "The Rolex Report" and read the entire book.
You will become wiser in determining the value.

I'd be very careful buying a big ticket item like that without knowing the seller. That would be a huge loss if it were bogus.

Not as big as a steel fake; 18k gold is 18k gold and worth $18 a gram scrap.

As for genuine "Rolex" I do believe ever Rolex has lost track of what they licensed back in the 60s to save a few dollars on import duty. There are bands that were licensed by Rolex for single department stores that look nothing like a Swiss band. I have an 18k band made in Argentina that came on a 1968 DD with a Spanish day wheel. Rolex USA sad it was not Rolex. I have my doubts about their ability to know what they licensed more than 40 years ago in Argentina.

thanks guys for the tips.

A jeweler told me to look inside the link where the screw threads are. He said around the screw threads (female side) there should be a triangle cut out. The cut out makes the threads cylinder (female side) look 'inserted' such that it was separated then bonded together.

Can anyone confirm?

A jeweler is as useful as breasts on a bull.

That could be a Rolex. Take it to Rolex USA and they will tell you yes or no. Then it may or may not be a Rolex.

Here is a picture of my clasp.
It sure does look nice and crisp.
The pic of the clasp on ebay is no where near the quality.
And the crown on the clasp too is too flimsy.

Oh boy .................. here we go again. Earl C will back me on this as he's just gone through the same issue. There are any number of Rolex bands out there that are the real thing by virtue of the fact that Rolex gave their blessing to various well know department stores here in TX that at one time or another were licensed Rolex AD's to have the bands made in Mexico. Thus, it is quite possible that what the o/p is looking at is one of those bands in the possession of a watch shop here in TX

If the bands are Swiss made they should all have the same markings as they would have been made by Rolex. The band on eBay has all of the Swiss markings so it would have to have been made by Rolex and not contracted for.

Notice the cut out where the band links together. I have never seen a genuine confirmed Rolex DD band with square corners (look above the 18K); they are rounded. Italian bands have the square corners and are stamped 18k in the same place as Rolex clasp but the rest of the clasp is blank. This leaves room to add fake Swiss hallmark.

The Hallmarks on the eBay band look sloppy and uneven. Polishing cannot account for uneven markings. There should be a model number stamped on the clasp it is missing on the eBay band.

As was stated this could be Swiss Rolex links with an aftermarket clasp. I have seen them the other way with a Rolex clasp and after market links.

This does not mean the owner has not had the band for many years and doesn't know. That said I would say the clasp is not Rolex or Rolex approved. It is still worth $915 scrap value minimum.
