What would you have said?

Standing at the bar of one of the smaller international "outlaw MC" party on Saturday night, ordering a drink, I noticed one of their members standing next to me admiring my Sub No Date when he said "nice looking watch" to which I replied "yeh it should be for $5000, it's a Rolex".

The conversation about the watch was dropped and we moved on to other things.

I really had to say that, rather than try and fob it off as something other than genuine and expensive. If I tried to play it down I would have lost face.

I was there on my own for another hour.

A few friends arrived later we stayed for a couple of hours, got bored and left.

What would you have said?

Definitely would have just taken the compliment and not have mentioned price at all...

I agree with Henry- "Thank you" would suffice. Dropping the price and the brand just sounds tacky in my opinion.

If someone complimented your car would you reply "yeah, it should be nice for $200,000... it's a Ferrari!"

Just an opinion.

I would have said what you said, but added "I'm shocked that a dolt like you could actually recognize a fine timepiece."

What if he showed you his Gold Daytona after you said what you say?
Not that it happened. But it could one day.

Price dropping is not only tacky, but could also be dangerous. I don't get it.

I don't know you as a person and won't infer anything from your post, but I'd have a strong inclination to believe that anyone making that statement was a class a d-bag.

Am I missing some context as an American? What is an 'outlaw mc'?

When my friends compliment my watch and ask me how much it cost, I always say, "I'd rather not say". First, its none of their beezwax; second, if they are truly interested in finding out, there's this thing called the world-wide-web!

I would have said, "Thanks." I have no need to tell anyone how much my watch costs. People who know anything about Rolex watches know the cost.

X2.
I would NEVER bring up the price of any of my watches unless the other person asked first. Otherwise if someone were to notice my watch I would say "thank you", followed by "are you into watches?" , and go from there.
Who knows, I did this one time and ended up talking with the guy for an hour lol

I would have said "Thank you".

My guess is that the person making the compliment, knew it was a Rolex.

Either way mentioning price is very tacky. If some one responded to me like you did, I would definitely have a little fun at their expense.

If you're secure with yourself just say thanks and let it go. Do you wear fine timepieces to impress or because you simply appreciate what's on your wrist?

Ive had this happen a time or two as well. Usually once you start talking watches at some point you both start to talk about how much you paid and whether or not you got a good deal on it, etc. But at that point in the conversation it isnt to impress the person, its just watch talk.

To answer the original question- I think a simple "thanks" would have done and nothing more needed to be said.

Although my first instinct is to usually be a smarta**, I have become wiser with age...

When someone gives me a compliment, I say "thanks".

When a friend or co-worker asks the price of one of my watches I make up the most outrageous number I think they will believe - try it sometime, it's fun.
