Level of dress vs. level of watch??

Hello again all here at TRF! Now that warmer weather is here in Northern Ohio and I'm starting to pull the the shorts and golf shirts out of storage (I will spare you the mental image of my pasty white legs after a long winter! ), a thought has begun to creep into my mind related to fashion protocol as it relates to our watches. So, I wanted to post my query and get all of your thoughts on the subject.

Simply stated, do any of you select which watch you will wear on any given day based on your choice of clothes that you will be wearing.....or specifically the LEVEL at which you are dressed? For example, this morning as I was putting on shorts and a golf shirt for a leisurely day around the house, I had a hard time strapping on a gold watch as it just felt a little out of place for what I was wearing. Do any of you think this way as your getting dressed in the morning, or has the WIS in me just totally gotten out of control?

So, what are your thoughts? Is SS better suited for casual dress? Is gold and casual wear a fashion faux pas? In other words, should your level of watch match the level of your dress? Taking it one step further, have you ever been self conscious that your watch is just too nice for the clothes you have on?

I feel SS or SG is proper for casual attire with all gold reserved for dress occasions. My .02

That's the beauty of the polar Exp2 for me these days. I feel I can dress it up or down sufficiently to cover all situations, so it's always with me.

i TOTALLY do this. I put on a Pam 126 because i had an ER shift today (scrubs) and i took off my 18k DD. My SS/18k GMT2c is the perfect watch as it goes either way.

I usually change out a watch for a specific occasion, not because of what I might be wearing......

Absolutely greed.... although IMO the same can be said for any SS or TT Rolex Sports.

I find my TT to be a bit flashy for regular daily wear if I am in jeans, shorts, etc...so the SS model(s) come into play most of the time...but when dressed up it is a treat to put the TT on and because it doesn't get as much wear makes it a special thing to wear it so I enjoy it that much more....

I really feel the watches I have can be worn with about everything since they are all SS models...If im not at work(slacks,polished shoes,button down long sleeve shirt but no tie)im wearing jeans and a nice tshirt.

What makes owning/collecting several Rolexes so much fun is how each one matches with the clothes I'm wearing. So yes, the clothes/occassion decide which Rolex I'm wearing that day/night.

When an outfit is completely picked out, the finishing touch, IMHO, is the Rolex you wear. Dark charcoal suit goes well with my SS Rolex Datejust. My navy suit goes best with my TT Bluesy. Practically everything else goes great with my GMT II Coke.

And frankly, that's also how I'm eyeing my future purchases.

- SS 16610 Sub goes with practically anything.
- Everose Datejust is purely for dress-up.
- TT Black Submariner...I think it's mostly for dress-up, but I'm getting it simply because I just LOVE that darned thing!!!
- TT Black Daytona. That watch goes everywhere, but mostly to the boardroom.

I have to say though: nothing sticks out worse than a Rolex that's not worn in the right context. The versatility of a ss Sub/GMT makes it attractive anywhere. Yesterday, at the gym, I saw a member wearing an SS Daytona. In sweats and shorts...just didn't look right. A disservice to the daytona, IMHO!!

I agree...this is the reason why you need a stable of watches..
The only point I'd disagree on is the dress watch...A TT sub is not a dress watch.
a dress watch is a cellini prince or a Patek on black leather..

But absolutely..yes! I wear Bluesy only with blue shirts.

Big breitling -- only gets out in warm weather with rolled up sleeves..

Daydate 18K - when we dress to impress..

the others - brown belt -brown watch strap

it goes on and on

Ive worn a SS GMT throughout most of my life and career. If you own several watches when the mood arises you can put something else on or if you have 1 watch change the band, bezel etc.

Often, I actually make it a point to wear a watch that doesn't match the level of clothing.

So if I'm in shorts, t-shirt and sneakers, I'd intentionally wear gold or TT, simply because it appears unmatched.

For me it's all about which watch I feel like wearing that day. I have no problems wearing a sports watch (Sub, GMT) with a suit, or wearing my Day-Date with shorts, t-shirt, or even sweats.

If James Bond can wear a Sub on NATO with a dinner jacket, why not.

Except for the Rolex Cellini line of watches, none of them strike me as too formal to be worn with causal wear, or too casual that it could not be worn with a suit, or to formal that they cannot be worn with casual wear. When it comes to casual dress, IMHO it depends on the level of "ruggedness" of the outfit. When I wear a short sleeve shirt and khaki's (country club and golf attire), I do not think even an all gold Day-Date would look out of place, but if I wore the same shirt pair with my jeans and boots (tropic cowboy), stainless steel would be my choice.

Some Rolex watches really just fit every use. The GMT Master II-C is one of the most versatile in this regard I think. Worn with a fine suit, it displays a no-nonsense functional attitude of someone on the go. It looks rugged enough to go with blue jeans and a t-shirt. A humble two-tone Datejust, feels a bit out of place with more rugged wear, but is fine for finer casual wear to formal occasions. Just my 2 cents.

I think Gold watches can be worm with casual dress such as shorts etc but please make sure any other jewelry worn such as rings, belt buckles, cuff links etc are also in Gold, please don't mix the metal colors.

Unless of course its a TT then there are no rules for such

I never wear a gold watch with shorts and a tee shirt. I may wear a TT watch with a nice pair of Docker shorts and a polo. When wearing long pants the belt, shoes, and band match. Rarely a bracelet with a suit, and always a black strap with a Tux.
