One week after I got my LV, I went over to a friends house for an evening of fellowship and a campfire. After more that a few beers, we were running low on fire wood, so I decided to chop wood with my LV on. According to the AD the impact of the ax striking wood and the subsequent vibrations caused my watch to get way out of whack. I had to have it regulated. FYI - Don't chop firewood under the influence while wearing a mechanical watch.

I was using a box cart at work years ago.......it tipped down, my left hand re-flexed and the crystal of the watch stopped the cart from hitting the ground. I took it immediately to my AD. I took no photos. I only had it in my possession for a few minutes while it was damaged.

New Dial
New Hands
New Crystal
Serviced the Movement
Polished Case and Bracelet

$854 later, it was good as new

2 week old submariner. Drinking and playing bags with some buddies. Argue over whether one can run faster without shoes on. I don't have the shoes. 50 meter dash on pavement...with long jeans...no shoes. Trip at about 30 yards going full tilt. Hit hard and roll and skip across pavement. Come up bleeding from every joint except my nugget. Deep scuffs on bracelet but (thank Garsh) didn't get the case or dial at all. Woulda won too...if I hadn't been drinking...and been barefoot...with long jeans on...and pushing 40 years old...

I don't know about dumb, but this is my related experience.

My girlfriend and I are enjoying a weekend get-away in Victoria, BC. I’m wearing my watch on a strap and as I cross the street the spring pin breaks and my Jaeger LeCoultre Reveil Master Control flies off of my wrist landing on the cobblestone street. Fairly good sized ding in the case and rotor is dislodged. I put the watch in my pocket and said to my girlfriend, “I am not going to let this ruin my day”. In my mind I was deliberating whether I should lay in the middle of the road, assume the fetal position, and await the next oncoming bus.

In a JLC cal 809 the rotor is pretty special to allow the clapper to strike the case and make that beautiful sound. Loved the sound of that alarm. My watchmaker can’t get the parts as JLC tightly controls parts, unlike Rolex who will exchange a part. JLC wants $2,700 for the repair (new case, and on and on) and they state in the estimate that either all the work is to be done or they will not service the watch. Think, I’ll ever own a JLC? I sent the watch to Roland Murphy and they repaired for I think $650. Couldn’t tell it was ever dinged. Funny, in that I bought the watch originally from Roland off of TZ in 1998. Here is a pic of my Reveil which I no longer own.

Two weeks after I got my Omega I was working in cold box (walk in freezer) and hit the crystal against the metal shelves. I had a deep scratch at the 12 o clock point for the next 6 years till it got serviced last December. Every other time I went to get it fixed I found something else to spend my money on.

A good friend of mine just got a beautiful gold Patek. Sorry - I can't remember the model but I think it was a Calatrava. Anyhow... after a few week of owning he was filling the car with fuel and it somehow got a bad ding on the inner lug! Stood out like you know what!

Luckily he got a vintage watch specialist to fix - cost about $500- with a new non-patek strap!

I can't see the repair - it was done so well.

You need to be careful with those dress type watches! My explorer 1 would stand a better chance as it is steel and not soft 18K gold.

I was camping at yellowstone nat'l park last September and took off my sub and placed it on a shelf in the public shower stall I was using.I got dressed and met my buddies outside and started heading to yellowstone lake for some fishing,I got about a block away then looked to my wrist, and then oh no I left it in the shower.I have it insured,so I really wasn't that worried about lossing it.funny how insurance changes the way you feel about lossing something valued at $6000.Well I got back to the shower stall, and my sub was waiting for me.a close call, for state farm insurance.

will insurance cover your loss in that instance??

i was under the assumption that insurance will only cover a destroyed rolex in which you produce the damaged good OR if your rolex is stolen and you file a police report.

im not sure one can just go to their insurance company and say " oh, by the way, i lost my rolex, please replace"....if thats the case than many would insure...give to a friend to hold on to...make up some story about losing it and voila you now have 2 rolexes.....

might want to check with your insurance and see in what instances will they cover your rolex....

im also sure...if your insurance DID cover a loss of watch by ones own fault that they would not insure it again for a second time.... OR without charging you major premium that would probably make you sick

thats how insurance companies roll

not that great of a story, but I feel completely dumb when I do it, I just can't seem to keep my wrist away from door knobs when I walk through the door way at some places. Very annoying

I am constantly walking too close to walls and when my arms swing I hit the crystal I intentionally avoid brick/concrete walls for this reason. I also will hit my sub sometimes walking through doorways. I think I have poor body-awareness or something

It's really all a matter of your policy and what you've set up. Generally it's a separate personal articles policy that can be tweaked every which way. Heck, the way mine is set up if my wife loses one earring, they will replace both so that the set matches.

Lots of options.

I exercise caution in wearing a watch. The safest place for a watch to be, is on the wrist. Not in a pocket or bag.

It's also prudent to check the springbars or have them replaced if necessary. Gunk, dirt or filth are the enemy of springbars.

I am fortunate that I don't have yet a story to tell...

Cheers.

Not so much dumb or stupid, but about a week after I got Millie I was pushing the cart through the grocery store and felt a sudden shift on my wrist. When they sized my watch, they apparently didn't tighten the screws they removed well enough and one backed all the way out. "Luckily" it was winter and the whole thing got caught up in the cuff of my coat and never made it to the cold hard tile.

One more in the PRO column for the NATO strap (except on the Millie)

Fortunately, I am still in possession of my first and only Rolex.

However, I've stupidly lost a lot of things in my life and most of those stories begin with, "I was drunk as a skunk and...."

I quit drinking back in '92 and I still manage to stupidly lose some things from time to time, though.
