Icon5 First rolex...SS Daytona or SS SUBC? Please help me Rolex aficionados!

Hi everyone!

I have been following this forum for a little while now..and wanted some advice from all you amazing people.

Now I am not much of a collector..but I have admired Rolex since I was a kid. Many members of my family would have Rolexes and still do...and since seeing them I have always wanted one. To me, it epitomized cool and luxury. It was the ultimate piece of machinery. I am older now and that is still etched into my mind. Patek may be more expensive..but to me, Rolex symbolizes a lot more. I am not a jerk looking to show off...I am just attracted to the finer things in life. I admire the craftsmanship of a Rolex...exquisite would be an understatement.

I am now older and in a position where I could possibly purchase one. I was thinking should I go with a Black dial SS daytona or the new SS sub ceramic?

I love the sub..i mean it is just so beautiful. I am besotted by it...but after having seen the black daytona pics im in love with it too lol

So now there is a bit of a dilemma...thing with the sub is that it is so common. The issue with the daytona is that it could get scratched a lot with the pcl and the shiny bezel.

I need a watch that will last..and not look scratched up and old. It needs to be worn with both casual wear as well as formal.

This could be my only rolex for a long while..so I am not sure which way to go. Should i just go for the daytona and not care about scratches and babying it? or should i go with the sub and ignore the fact that its quite common?

the sub goes with everything..formal and casual. yet the daytona is mesmerizing and exudes class. Do you think the daytona goes with both formal and casual?

I wouldnt wear it for work, as I type on a keyboard all day long and metal hitting a desktop repeatedly really gets annoying! It would be for evenings and weekends.

I know what most of you are thinking RIGHT now... "get the watch that sings to you" Thing is they both sing to me..for different reasons. I just want your opinion as you are the experts..I would like to know other peoples opinions thats all.

Rolex aficionados, I ask for your kind assistance!

What would YOU do? (sorry about the long post..but it is a BIG decision in my life) thanks!

Welcome. Given its your 1st, shoot for the Sub - its an icon!...unless you truly need a chrono.
I'd get the Daytona on the next go around.
The best is to try both out to see which sings to you.
Good luck.

Welcome to TRF.....

Best thing to do is try each on and see how you feel about it, it may help you make up your mind. Only you can do that. Both are great watches.

for me daytona,... if you want sub, i suggest the current model.... the new sub will be there in the next 15 - 20 years, and you will have plenty of time to flip, if you want to....

+10. You spend that much on a watch, you want to make sure you like the way it fits on you. If money is no issue, go for the Daytona IMO

As much as I love my Daytona, and longed for it for years, for the first, I'd reccomend going with the classic sub; (my first was a GMT). It just gives you a sense of what a Rolex feels like and really is. If you are not satisfied, or still lust after the Day, you can always upgrade later or better yet, add a second watch!

Welcome.

Always best to go with the one that speaks to you more, however as the new Sub has yet to hit the street that is tough.

The Sub will wear bigger and of course have a date feature if that's important. Additionally IMO the Sub will be the easier of the two to read in all conditions.

Good luck on your decision.

Thats one of the big reasons I would go with the Daytona now and get a sub a bit down the road

My vote is the Daytona. I just love this watch. I think you can wear a Daytona with casual clothes or a suit but then again I think you can wear any Rolex with just about anything.

The bezel of the daytona will scratch up a lot, as you said. If you are going to wear it all the time it is just something you will have to accept. With that said, I would still go with the Daytona, because there is just something special about it.

Welcome to TRF, Since it's going to be your first Rolex I would try both on.
I myself like the Daytona better but the daytona doesn't have the date so you want to check on that...and also the Sub is not out yet so not sure if you want to wait for it...

welcome!

my only question to you is - which one can you get straight away/soon without having to pay a premium over the MSRP? :-)

you can not go wrong with either.

Pity it can't be a duet if they both sing to you. Terrible decision to make. The Daytona i would get from DavidSW BNIB or LNIB or some other good seller and save on above MSRP. The Sub is nice but has not hit the streets in Ceramic yet so i would go for the older 16610 or LV. If you want it soon its the Datona/16610/LV.

If they both sing to you, I would go for the Daytona.

The Sub-c would be bought at a premium since it will hit the market with the customary hype all new models get which artificially causes a price premium.

The Daytona, on the other hand, has shown that it retains its value.

While I don't espouse buying watches based on resale value, it's important in this case since it's your first and the likelihood of flipping that first Rolex is high.

Good luck!

Both fine watches...I would advocate the sub for the many reasons people have mentioned above.

Unless you have a safe queen, I just can't imagine my keeping a Daytona looking very nice for long...that shiny bezel has to be a scratch magnet...

But they are both great options!!!

If you can get your hands on a Daytona, go for it. You should always be able to get ahold of a sub later down the road.
